I think at one point in this topic I challenged davidk and any other atrac equipped vehicle to a trail run at the infamous Hammers out in Johnson Valley in order to determine and see how well atrac performs against fully locked vehicle. It would be the ultimate place to see how each system performs in a controlled environment . I guarantee Johnson Valley will be the hardest place he will ever be on the trail on.

Umm, no... My first time trying to climb that grade I was in low range, but my A-TRAC button wasn't depressed... as soon as my front left tire spun up a rooster tail of sand, I realized it was off... It was after I turned on A-TRAC that my truck climbed it... I climbed it twice that day. The first of the two successful climbs, I made a run to the grade in H4 (TRAC) and when I got to the rockface that stopped me, I went into L4 (A-TRAC) and climbed over the rock to the top.

I have been in places that only A-TRAC (or a front locker) would get me out... Being high centered on the back diff and spare tire was one instance. I have wheeled with HB Murphy with A-TRAC only while he and others used their front lockers... 2-3 foot deep mud bog as well as the Widowmaker and other steep sections of the Mision Santa Maria road.

I have intentionally burried my truck in sand with open differentials (VSC OFF MODE) and 32 psi tires, only to turn on the A-TRAC and have the truck extract itself out, without me getting out of the truck.

    Too many to name...

The One Tri Hill video last year shows me climbing to where the truck comes to a halt becasue of tire spin and steepness... I put my foot into it, and it continues on to the top.

I hear what you say about the FJ, but I don't know how he was trying to wheel with it. It seems as if A-TRAC stops the truck... but you put your foot into it, and the engine seems to wake up and crawl you to the top.

If he could climb it in open diff. mode, then it wasn't an A-TRAC/ Locker only hill? You say he also had the rear locked? Well, that disables A-TRAC over 3 mph... I don't use the rear locker with A-TRAC for hill climbs... maybe that was the problem?

I did use the rear locker with A-TRAC when I was wheeling in the snow last Feb. at Pine Valley... just to try out that mode, and it worked fine.

Anyway, we have NINE choices of drive mode, so if you don't like A-TRAC or can't get it to work for you... try any of the 7 modes that don't include A-TRAC.

It just has worked like GOLD for me everytime I called it into action.

Will you come to Mision Santa Maria with me next time, as well?

I would love to go on any traction challange... as long as a STOCK suspension (not raised) Tacoma can drive it. If it is a traction challange and not a clearance challange, great! My truck is only 1/2 taller than stock because of the tires I run (265/75-16)...

dont get me wrong, i think ATRAC is great. I just dont think it holds a candle to real lockers...

you have more traction that i do. ill admit it. you made it easier in the sand than i did. although a 4 banger and manual i had more traction than my power could handle so i wound up stalling A LOT.

ATRAC is like cross eyed nurse pushing your wheelchair while you trying to get to snack machine.
You want to get Combos, she thinks they are not healthy for you so when you try to steer towards the vending machine she pushes wheelchair away from vending machine. That fight lasts until she hits the patch of wet floor, slips, then falls on her face sending your wheelchair and you down the stairs.
    :D

EDIT: The primary benefit of ATRAC is that makes every noob feel like champion of KOH. Up to the moment they step on real trail and find out crouches there were using are too thin.
