It is so funny that an old time four wheeler like me can accept new technology like A-TRAC, but some of you kids just can't accept it as something that really works!

A-TRAC is better than front and rear lockers ONLY under these two headings:
    1) Steering ability on tight trails.
    2) It doesn't cost more and it is a Toyota product that comes with the Off Road 4WDs.

Front and Rear lockers are better for pure traction in a mostly straight run.

So did anyone ever answer the OP?

The answer is NO.....lockers are better.

Easy proof: If this wasn't true then you would see traction control systems on competition rock crawlers instead of actual locked diffs.

    Done.
    End of story.

    It was. :)

Regarding the rest of this thread, I think points have been made. David, all due respect, the type of challenge, Mr. Proof is contemplating would have you completely forgetting about ATRAC and wondering if AAA covers helo recovery! :)

LOL so ATRAC is only better when you steer and its cheaper? So for climbing or anything else a locker is better? Sorry us KIDS want the item that is better in more situations than just being cheap. And as said before the steering is a non issue on dirt. Thanks for clarifying

not a true statement.. all how you drive, go on a trail run with me and i will show you..

something just occured to me, you have no armor..so, your trail runs have been limited in difficulty due to the fact that you (or any other person) wont risk damaging a vehicle on something that has more extreme terrain. i bet once you get on an actaul trail run with real obstacles that require superior traction devices you'll be red in the face wishing for front/rear lockers..and not ATRAC

You haven't seen my truck??? HB Murhpy was there as I slowly dropped off a cliff and my rear panel got punched then that rock snagged my bumper and pulled it like taffy! Other dents are under my truck, too.

This is my only vehicle, my daily driver... so, it is not something I tow to the rocks... obviously, if it was I would have armor and lockers.

The truck came with A-TRAC, I discovered that after I got it... I was getting a new Off Road for the rear locker (as I had twice before)... The A-TRAC was a discovery I made afterwards... and next to buying a front locker (which I couldn't do), it is a fantastic improvemnt over my 2005 Taco. The TRAC in H4 is also a BIG improvement in traction I discovered.

Because so little was known about what A-TRAC is and does, I have posted the discoveries I have made. That's all. It is ALMOST like front and rear lockers, and because it is included and it doesn't have to be shut off to steer, I think (for me and others) it is better. If you want to crawl up boulders, have the bucks to spend, want more choices, then yes... get the front locker!

This. Toyota's own 70 series Landcruiser, a true off-road vehicle is available with f/r locking diffs as an option from factory. A-trac is not even considered for those

If you have a front locker, then there is no need for A-TRAC.

Just like, if you have A-TRAC, then there is no need for a front locker UNLESS your truck is going to be a rock crawler and not a dual purpose recreational four wheeler/ work truck.

Aren't you in a lease on that thing? If I was on a lease, I might do the same as you. The majority of the peeps on here right now (with the exception of Mr. Teflon - Brandon) would have a problem when we roll ours in for a lease return!!! LOL :D

Yah, maybe! Although when we wheeled in fresh snow (not as deep as yours), I had no problems... But, neither did Brian in a Sport.

Yes, a lease... but same deal as a purchase... I just change the truck after 5 years, or buy it. I have full insurance on it here and in Mexico. www.BajaBound.com
