I disagree, I've had both the new 4.0L v6 and now the 2.7L 4 banger. they are both tough as nails engines that will surely last well over 200,000 miles. Someone on here with a new 4.0 l v6 already posted over 250,000 miles. I don't know if you have even owned a 2nd gen Tacoma but time will prove you wrong as more tacoma's reach higher mileage! The new quality trumps the old for sure!

Buzz, I do hope you're right since I just bought one that now has 2700 miles on it. I think the engines will prove fine-just the small stuff i'm thinking of (Electric motors, blowers, etc.). I imagine the guy that bought my 92 has half a million miles on it now. Always hated I sold it! I changed the oil every 3000 miles with Castrol dino. Great trucks!

We have the 2.7 5-speed. Personally, it's pretty zippy and gets good gas mileage, especially if you try.

HOWEVER, when we bought the 2.7, the sales guy swore it could tow 6,500lbs, which got me all excited since I have a project car I'd like to tow. Back in reality, though, it can't, so now I have a V6 6-speed on the way. My husband will probably still keep his 2.7 around for both daily driving and hauling random stuff him and his friends come up with, and I will finally have a truck that can tow my project car around with. Granted, the V6 will then be my daily driver...which...I have mixed feelings about. I haven't received the V6 yet (still in transit), but I'll load it up and get back to you about which you may like better. Apparently the V6 6-speed rides and shifts like a semi. Greeeeeat....

Holy shit, your son must have two speeds. Dead stop and full throttle. We get 23mpg currently with our 2.7, and that's with being a little aggressive. If we toned it down on take-off, we could probably get near the 27mpg+ mark

For all those stating that the 4 cylinder gets way better mileage you obviously haven't done any modifications to your truck. I drive 450 miles a week for my commute. I bought a brand new 2.7 4x4 access cab in 05. Bone stock I got 23mpg on the highway. Got rid of the horribly lame stock tires and switched to Michelin ltx's in 265/70/16. Same height just wider. Dropped to 22. Switched those out after 60k or so for some General Grabber AT2's in the same size with an actual real A/T tread. Finally had the traction I wanted but I was then getting 20.5-21 at best. Truck was in a perfect tune the whole time. I was satisfied with the performance but it wasn't quick by any stetch of the imagination. Last year I sold it and bought an 05 double cab 4x4/auto TRD with 265/70/16 BFG rugged trails on it. This truck will absolutely destroy a 4 cylinder truck in any kind of performance comparison. And it gets 21 mpg. I've owned about a dozen 4 cylinder toyota trucks with 22r's and re's Even had a 22RTE once and I loved them. I Still have one in my 89 plow rig. But they were quite a bit smaller and lighter. They were slow too, but so was pretty much everything back then.

Correct, our I4 is stock. Now, why does that seem to be a bad thing based on your tone...and thanks for calling my tires horribly lame. You are speaking to an incredibly large crowd here. Throwing out insults about stock is likely to ruffle SOMEONE'S feathers....unless I really am the only stock Tacoma in the whole world. In which case, I spare you two feathers, two.

Also, no, ours really is quick, enough. It's no 1/4-mile freak, but for a 4-banger truck, it's quick.

    Clazzio seat covers,

I'm right there with you friend ....... that's why different engines/platforms are offered .... to fit the consumer's needs. My 2WD I4 is just what I need.

Some folks (and it is just a few) find a big need to downplay the stock trucks ...

My guess is they have a small penis ... just my opinion .... did I say that?

There's nothing wrong with a 4 cylinder truck. I've owned over a dozen of them. The point I was attempting to make before the size of my penis was mentioned was that if you're considering buying a 4 cylinder truck becuase of the better mileage don't plan on changing it whatsoever. My 4 cylinder 05 was bone stock except for more aggressive tires. Most enthusiasts looking to take their trucks off road (or just to make them look cool) will install more aggressive or larger tires. This greatly affects your mileage. I don't feel it's worth maybe 1MPG difference for a slower truck. My TRD is bone stock too. But at least they came with somewhat decent tires. Those skinny highway tread stockers my 4 cylinder truck came with were terrible in the snow. That's the only reason I changed them. And the comment about my junk is a reminder why I so rarely come here. This site has an incredibly high number of young and immature members.

Lol what? My truck is highly modified and I get better mileage than stock. I never get under 23 mpg and I drive primarily under city conditions. My rims are bigger, and my tires are wider. This hasn't decreased my mileage at all. And the only stock suspension components I have are the bolts holding everything together and the rear axle.

And your 6 will destroy my truck at Any kind of performance comparison? Orly? I'll bet you I'd rape that V6 6 lug any day through a twisty mountain pass.

    Clazzio seat covers,

I understand and agree with most of what you are saying. My trust is with the engineers who know and design these vehicles. Any modification is just that ... a change from what was presented as designed.

This is why Toyota, and every other manufacturer, offers a wide selection of vehicles to choose from. 4, 6, and 8 cylinders, 2 door, 4 door, access door, 2WD ... 4WD ... it is endless.

I have had 4 Toyota pick ups since 1984 .... all 2WD 4 cylinders ... they have suited me well. Have provided me with miles of excellent performance, and still being able to use it to fit my needs.

I tire of the bashing at times as well ...... it tends towards the insecurities one possesses and can sit in their dark rooms chatting.

Now, as far as anyone pointing out a specific member (no pun intended) .... that's an old joke about compensating for the lack of something, replacing it with things larger.

Many times, humor is lost in the written word.

If you use the truck as a "truck" per say towing, hauling stuff, etc... The v6 is a must. The I4 wont do more than light loads... Unless all you want to do is to take the truck to the mall, off road with no payload or haul few loads a year.

I had the I4 2.7L, didn't have enough hauling capacity or towing capacity, traded in for v6 and couldn't be happier. My truck is work truck so I constantly haul or tow.

The gas mileage difference is definitely there. I got 19-22 in the I4 and get about 16-18 in the v6, however I have lead foot

I4 is rated to haul MORE than the v6. I went from a DCab LB 4x4 v6 taco to the 5 Lugger base. I use mine to haul payload and haul ass down the highway with zero issues! I see a huge difference in MPG's compared to my last tacoma that only got 19 mpg at best. I'm seeing a consistent 25 Mpg now , others have seen even more! The guy that complained about shitty Mpg's has a 4x4 which will never get the fuel economy of a 5 Lugger.

    Where did you read that?

    According to Toyota's website;

    I4 5 lug payload is; 1350lbs
    v6 6lug prerunner payload is; 1415lbs

Towing capacity for I4 and v6 without towing package is the same at 3500lbs.
