Model Railroading... anyone?

anyone here have model railroads? i built this N gauge back when i was stationed at andrews afb in md, couldnt move with it, and didnt have room for it here at my new house in oklahoma so i started collecting older Lionel trains.











this last one i picked up at a flea market here, got the set for $200 original 1976 amtrak alco set, unopened in the box. still wrapped in original plastic. yup, first one to open it and run it...

 

I was getting into the model railroad stuff but I really don't have the time or space to do it. Plus after riding real trains at work I kinda get sick of them.

 

yeah space is the issue with me... i just have then up on the wall now.. no ware to run them.... i'm gradually getting togeather the pieces to build a track aroudn the ceiling of a spare room.

 

There is some awesome stuff out there I have respect for people that can build the kind of things they do. I guess I don't have the patience either. I have thought about building a scale aircraft carrier group.

 

Nice! I always wanted one of these as a kid. Tried once, but didn't really have enough room for it. I do own Trainz ( THE best RR simulator/builder)

Everytime I see them for real though, I have to stop what ever I'm doing to gaze.

I'm just startgin to get back into it. Haven't touched it since jr high (late 70s). Before interwebz.

I bought an HO Athearn set for under the Christmas tree about 3 years ago.

Then I got on the webz. Holy shit. Now I have more locos than I do space to use them or rollign stock to justify that much power. I am looking for a local club to get involved with if I ever get some free time, because I have nowhere near enough room. And I have been reading up on DCC.

 

I need to post some pics of my overhead layout. I run mostly MTH but i do have some Lionel and Williams. I also like Standard Gauge as well.

 

I used to run ho trains when I was younger. I had a large table I built and had a pretty slick setup, but I never got pictures.

 

i don't think i could afford another hobby lol apparently money is the food that my truck needs and its a hungry sum bitch

 

expensive hobby..there's a train shop local to me that i visited not to long ago and all i can say it WOW..

 

i love the old tinplates... i have a lionel set from 39. with the 1668 locomotive, babe ruth box car, tanker and lionel lines caboose. all with the original box's...

i'm working on my ceiling lay out... just with christmas coming up.. put it on the back burner.. got to save up enough money for driving home to pennsylvania for chirstmas.

i'm going to make it with fastrak, 0-48 corners, just to accomidate some of the bigger trains, and less chance of a derailment. was originally planning on 0-72 corners but i think thats over kill.... not like i can afford to run a Bigboy or anything....

 

Andrew, if you have the space for O72 you should install them. Makes even the smaller engines run smoother.

 

yeah..... with the O72 i can run scale GG1's with no problem... i had relized that i should use O72 after i ordered all the 048 track.. the O48 ovan with 4 10in straight pieces in fastrak was $75.

i only have 2 semi scal GG1's, an alco A&B unit, a 4-4-2 and the 1668 streamlined. they all run good on O27. the semi scale cars will run fine too... but i'd really like to run the full length 70' streamlined cars, behind a full scale GG1 or maybe the Lionmaster T-1. the average price of them on ebay really isnt that bad

 

The larger rolling stock on O72 looks better as well.

K-Line made some really nice passenger cars when they were in business. Top shelf craftsman detail and reasonably prices.

 

Had an HO layout when I lived with my parents, but all I kept were the engines, rolling stock and a few buildings and some other bits. All that stuff is currently stored in my attic due to the fact that I don't have the space to setup another layout.

 

did Ho as a kid, and as a teenager started to get into n, but it never materialized

i miss it but it sure can be an expensive hobby

 

All of my hobbies are expensive and/or injurious.

 

They are so badass, but get real pricey.
