brake question

How in the hell do you fix squeaky drum brakes??? When I barely press on the brake pedal (right after you get through the "slack") it squeaks like crazy...


and while im at it the cabin air filter......if its still ticking could it be the fan being unbalanced

 

Sorry I can't help with the brake issue but....I did stumble across this awhile back for the fan issue. http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2143214&postcount=19 I have no idea if it works, I plan on trying it soon.

 

Oh yeah i have that thread in my favorites! I still dont get it though. the most logical things for the ticking would be the unbalanced fan or the bearings went bad.

 

Me either really, but mine only ticks on the lowest setting. So it sounds like i need to loosen one of those screws.

 

yeah mine does it on Fresh vent or low to low-mid AC. My dad thinks I'm crazy..... haha hes just deaf! haha (not really)

pull the drums and emory cloth the inside of them, spray the shoes with brake cleaner and when they dry emory cloth them too. keep in mind you're not trying to sand off deep grooves, just the glaze on them.

if that doesn't work have the drums turned and get new shoes. if you do the work yourself it'll probably cost you all of 40 bucks

 

your shoes may be glazed, you can remove the drum, lightly scuff both brake shoe and drum with sandpaper to get rid of glaze

 

for the cabin air filter..... i had ticking (like a loose washer on a bolt tick), turns out it was exactly that, a loose bolt with a washer! i dont know which one because the dealer took care of it, and i also had a mitt-full of pine needles jammed in the fan blades. dunno if this helps but thats what was wrong with mine

 

Thats what i think it is and yeah i got a ton of leaves and what not come out when i pulled the air filter out.

dig out as many as you can and try a slim extension for a vacuum to get whatever else is still in there. wish i could help with the bolt that has a washer on it but i truly dont know which one it is or how many have washers in there

 

Its on TTROA(?) I think the bolt is on the top of the fan that holds it down. Delphi=

 

emory cloth is a morons (me) way of saying emery cloth. it's sandpaper, usually very fine, that is cloth backed instead of paper backed so it can be used wet without falling apart. i prefer it over paper backed because it's a lot harder to tear apart, and the actual grit is some different material than the paper stuff uses. just works better for metal IMHO. you can get it at any hardware store pretty cheap.

Nope, drums (and rotors) get a "glaze" on them. it's friction material from the shoes (pads) that has kind of "baked on" the surface. it reduces braking ability somewhat and can cause squealing and grinding noises. on the shoes / pads it's the same stuff, but decided to stick to the shoe / pad instead. same effect though.

2nd edit - it's a good idea to wear a respirator when doing this...you don't need cancer later in life from a simple brake job today!
