It was cold, to say the least. When it warmed UP to +10, we went outside and played football in t-shirts because we were used to it being so cold.

Hahaha. You have to experience it to know it. But coming from someone who's lived in COLD ASS weather his whole life, gas/propane heating is the way to go. Baseboards are super inefficient, but I guess in Hawaii it'd do the job. The coldest I've ever experience here in Laramie was -58 F in 2006. We couldn't start our car, had to put it in neutral and push/pull it into the garage, then run all of our space heaters in the garage for 4 hours to heat up the engine block warm enough so it would start, then we drove to Phoenix for the week to warm up. It was hell.

I "lived" at the fire department I was part of for a while.. slept on the couch.. All they had was a kerosine heater until the mayor walked in asking me if I was ok. Told him I didn't feel good.. he said my face was really red.. he looked at the heater.. turned it off.. walked into his office and ordered an entire new heating system for the fire house :D
The guys were a bit pissed. They had been asking for a new heating system for a few years.. all it took was me spending a few nights there lol

Coldest it's been in Waimea was 38 or 39 early one morning couple years ago...love the cold though...and that is why Hilo and I do not get along very well. It's too damn hot and humid here!

In Hawaii, just tap into that volcano's lava flow. I'm sure it's pretty warm. Although you will piss off the volcano god....

Our main source of heat is an oil burning furnace. We also have a propane fireplace on the main floor (awesome heat) and two convect electric heaters upstairs

We go through 2-3 cords of wood a year, and don't turn on the furnace.
House stays in the mid to low 70s. When it gets above 75 we open the door & heat the garage.

...burned in a stainless steel high-efficiency woodstove (very similar to this one) in the living room (very similar to this one). Heats the whole house, never have to use the electric heaters.

Gave away the old cast-iron pig, but should have kept it... new stove is the cat's ass, but I loved the way the iron looked and held its heat.

A woodstove is the most efficient. The heat from a fireplace quickly dissipates. Electric and gas heaters cost a fair amount of money to run. A stove uses a log every few hours. The fire does not need to be large because all it is doing it keeping the cast iron hot. The cast iron remains hot for a very long time even after the fire has died.

We use Natural gas as main backup, then for the most part I installed a Pellet stove which heats the whole house. Pellet stove pumps out 50k BTU on high and burns 60-80 lbs of pellets every 48hrs. at a cost of $45-$90 a month max...

    QuadraFire is the brand.
    My pellet stove burns:
    Wood pellets
    Corn
    Cherry pits
    Olive pits

Can you run your pellet stove without power ?

I see some need power for the hopper feed .

    You might want to try:
500Watt Halogene work lamp. I used one in my office when the furnace was broke last winter.

Will keep you warm. You might need sunglasses but if on Hawaii you probably already have.
