    Bigorexia!
    How BIG is too BIG?
By: Elaine Hastings, RD, LD/N, Associates in Nutrition Therapy

Megarexia, or bigorexia, is the obsession with one's own musculature.
Just as anorexics become consumed with losing weight, tens of thousands of people suffer from a disorder that’s the opposite. Megarexia — also called bigorexia, reverse anorexia and muscle dysmorphia (MDM) — is the obsession with one’s own musculature. Sufferers have the delusion that they are too small, underweight, and underdeveloped. Therefore, they become consumed with building muscle tissue.
Not surprisingly, megarexia is most often found among highly-driven bodybuilders and athletes who believe that a perfect body is the necessary vehicle for success. Today’s competitive economy – with the heat on, for scholarship money, endorsements and pro-sports contracts – makes it even more likely for an athlete to slip into this dangerous abyss.
Most cases of this disorder go unrecognized, undiagnosed and untreated. That is because bodybuilders and athletes are particularly vulnerable because of the pressures they may feel with sport performance challenges. Society also plays a role since the media promotes muscularity and leanness. But I would bet that the percentages of those suffering from megarexia are significantly higher among persons who are heavily involved in weightlifting and other muscle development activities like wrestling.
Megarexics become completely preoccupied with their appearance: the pursuit of muscle will take precedence over special events, and especially among men. Men who are afflicted with megarexia will often continue to train even if they have broken bones. The loss of a job is also not uncommon, because megarexics will illogically put their workouts ahead of everything else in life, in pursuit of a physique, which they will never attain, even if they appear practically perfect by societal standards.
That’s the great irony of this awful disorder. Sufferers will spend their lives exercising, yet always remain embarrassed by their bodies, much the same way anorexics still see a fat person in the mirror while they’re actually wasting away. They will even shy away from situations in which their body is exposed. Megarexics focus on even the tiniest imperfection and let it drive them to train even harder, while they constantly compare their body to an unattainable ideal.
Megarexia affects people across the globe. Treatment is limited at this time, but medication and therapy can work. The main problem is that MDM is often missed as a diagnosis because patients see themselves as healthy, and give others a healthy impression. The cause of their psycho-behavioral problem is not yet fully understood.
Sadly, I expect an increase in megarexia cases, as do medical professionals who deal with patients suffering from it. Certain sports enthusiasts or competitors will be more at risk than others. Sports centered around thinness (dance, cross country running) or size and strength (gymnastics, football, wrestling, competitive bodybuilding) all present a risk.
If your child or loved one is competing in any of these, keep an eye out for abundant mirror checking, shyness about the body, obsession about the amount of protein in his or her diet, agitation if a meal is missed, and absence at special events due to a workout.

That's how powerlifter's are taught to bench. The goal is to create as little space between the weight and your chest, as well as creating more elasticity in your body. I'm not going to weigh in on the benefit/harm to your body (that's a whole other beast). Even then, his form is FAAAAAR from perfect for a power lift bench press. If I wasn't completely comfortable with that weight, no way in hell would I do it without a bench suit or able-bodied spotters. His communication with his spotter was terrible. He could've crushed his skull by bailing the way he did.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGqhgnojZQk

You have to understand that there is a difference between a DISORDER and recognizing your weaknesses to keep you going. I'm definitely in the latter group as well -- I can't NOT lift and eat clean, or I feel like garbage. MDM is an actual disorder where people are NEVER comfortable with their body. Imagine not being able to make love, shower at the gym, swim, etc. because you're ashamed of being seen without clothes. That's a TERRIBLE way to live dude. Working on my master's in dietetics :)

i've never done crossfit but in the latest issue of mens health i read an article that sounded like it was supporting crossfit in the beginning and ended up bashing it. in case anyone is interested in reading it, it's there..

good luck with it and let us know how it goes.

Can you give me the cliffsnotes on it? I unfortunately don't get MH anymore. My biggest concern is injury. I am very prone to injury, and I have heard that crazy angles, ridiculous # or reps, and pushing your body to the limit like that isn't a good combo... I haven't been able to make any progress in my other fitness ventures, so I am getting very desperate.

I have state records in powerlifting and also competed in a strongman or two and that is how I was taught to bench. I have not competed in a couple of years and have been less consistent in the gym but my back is fine.....the thing that kills the back is incorrect dead-lifts!! It is a full body lift not a damn good morning!!

I don't think crossfit is gonna get you bigger. You'll definitely get leaned out and build a good core and have really good endurance after doing it for awhile. But size can pretty much only be put on with a more traditional weight lifting workout routine. And if you wanna get jacked to the max then do what he \/ said.

I'm desperate man... I was on a solid lifting routine for nearly a year with MINIMAL results. And then I plateaued in about March of this year, at which point all progress had stopped. I kicked it up a notch in order to get off of it and ended up blowing out my shoulder doing shoulder press in the end of July. I am quite literally looking for anything that will give me the results that I want, outside of a full on steroid lifestyle. Here is the Crossfit that I am planning to attend. I am going to do their heavy program to hopefully get some solid lifting mixed in with the Crossfit aspect of it.
