Classification of Tacomas

How can you know if a Tacoma is 4x4 or 4x2? Does PreRunner mean 4x2?

 

prerunner is 4x2. a tacoma that has rear mudflaps that says 4x4 is usually an indication...

if you look underneath the vehicle and see a driveshaft under the engine, 4x4

if you look at the inside of the wheels and see a shaft that goes to the center of the wheel, 4x4

 

MY FLAPS DON'T SAY 4X4 BUT I HAVE 4 WHEEL DRIVE

4x4:
Usually has 4x4 badging on the rear mud flaps (as mentioned)
Look under the truck (as mentioned)
Look inside the truck, to the left of the center console, under the air vent there is a dial for the 4x4.

Pre-Runner:
Pre-Runner Badging on the tailgate
Sitts higher up than the base tacoma, same height as the 4x4.

4x2 Base Tacoma:
No Pre-Runner badging on the tailgate
Closer to the ground

Keep watch though, not all TRD Off-Road Toyota Trucks are 4x4.

 

Wow, way too much put into this... its simple really. do you have a 4x4 Switch (05+) or do you have a 4x4 Shift Lever (first gen).

 

exactly what he said! Easiest way to tell is the mudflaps though since PreRunners and 4x4s are identical, that is if they have not been taken off

 

Anyone who's spun a wrench a time or two on a truck will be looking for the CV axles on the front end.
