    GODDAMMIT!!!

    RAGE! RAAAAAWWWWWRRRRR!!!!

    /endstupidity

So I just came upon my first problem. It seems the glue that kept the lower paper cone attached to the spider came unglued on one of the subwoofers. It creates a low but annoying rattle. I contacted the seller. Hope everything gets fixed.

On the other Sub I am noticing a small hole in the lower cone as well, but I suspect this is just for breathing purposes. Sound seems fine coming from it.

I am annoyed... At least I have one sub... Already took the bad one out and put it in original box ready for whatever.

As a side note: Even though I know this was a manufacturer defect. If there anything that could cause the cone to unglue itself from the spider?

Sound was good, apart from the low rattle, so I do not think it is a Gain issue. The sub are overpowered by 150, but I honestly never turned them incredibly high, as the rattle bothered me and I need to exchange it.

    What a pain...

Post pictures of the "small hole". This is something NOT visible from the outside of the sub correct? Meaning, you have to take out the sub to see this right?

After further inspection, I noticed this seems to be part of how it is built. I was refering to the two small holes you see in the cone in this diagram. they are very close to the spider and no they cannot be seem from the front.

That sub works perfectly. I have it playing atm. The other sub however, is fucked up. Came from factory like that. I am trying to resolve the situation with SonicElectronix but they do not seem to want to take responsibility for it. What a pain in the ass...

I'd fucking rip them a new one. I've done it before. If you need me to get involved as an "installation professional" I'd be more than happy to do so.

We'll, since I bought from that store through their eBay store, I went ahead and opened a case with eBay's resolution center. Hopefully everything comes out alright.

Thank you very much for the offer though. I will keep this thread updated.

As a side note: By the time this gets resolved, hopefully my cab should be completely blacked out, so I will be able to show the final pics. :D

As a second side note: I have been using my system with the lone sub. It sounds amazing. Can't wait till I can use it with both subs.

As a third side note...: If this does not go my way. I am going to hammer my cab till I can fit a 10 inch... Then I will proceed to put 2 10s... (a man can dream...)

    Update:

Well, they just called me and stated that it may have been damage while being shipped, as Alpine inspects every product before boxing, so they say. Seems like this is on the way to be resolved. Hopefully. Kinda annoyed I had to open a case in the resolution center for them to do something though.

    Oh well.

Well if SonicElectronix doesn't open all of the boxes that have been shipped to them before they ship them to you....it could have been damaged before it even was relayed to you. And since they have no way of knowing it should be up to them to get shit together.

your subs will not be overpowered due to impedance rise, and the fact that music is dynamic.

besides power dosent kill subs, its heat and/or mechanical damage, how else could people burp subs at like 5x over rated power?

I meant overpowered as in above their rated RMS. Did not imply that as a bad thing. Thanks for the info though. Makes me feel more at ease while using them.

distortion is the main killer, play em clean and they should last a long time.

That's like saying cyanide doesn't kill you...it's your heart stopping that ends your life.

Heat and mechanical damage are a result of too much power. A speaker is designed to dissipate a certain amount of heat that is produced by a certain amount of power. When you exceed this limitation you burn it up. Speakers are also designed to move a certain amount (forward and backward) and you can predict with certainty how much power it will take to drive a speaker that far in a given enclosure. When you exceed these limits it will break physically.

Too much power = Speaker death

well then i guess everyone "over powering" their subs are doomed? have you even seen someone wall socket a sub? many well built subs take it just fine.

sure a sub will "bottom out" and smack the back plate, but that dosent mean its broken.

playing with loads of distortion will kill your sub much faster than sending a few (or more) hundred watts to it and having it play clean.

Nope, not what I said at all. I said a sub has both thermal and mechanical limits. A manufacturer takes both of those into account and then factors in people's natural born stupidity and comes up with an RMS rating for how much power the sub can take. This number is usually conservative because of said public stupidity and it helps keep warranty claims significantly lower.

It is also important to remember that the mechanical limits and the thermal limits are dependent on a few things. When you say, "play it clean" and "distortion" I think you really are referring to clipping. Distortion (THD) will not hurt a speaker in any way. Clipping absolutely will. If you don't know what clipping is I'm pretty sure I wrote a thread on that topic so go look for it. So it's thermal limits are dependent on an unclipped signal. Yes, I gave my old Tang Band 6.5" subs more than double their rated power for years. That's because I had an unclipped signal and because I had them in a proper enclosure that kept the mechanical limits in check.

The other important thing you need to remember is that just because you hook up a sub to a 1000RMS amp doesn't mean the sub is getting 1000watts all the time. When the volume is low you're probably only giving it 1 MAYBE 2 watts of power. As you increase the volume on your headunit the power sent out by the amp increases. I don't know why people can't get their heads around this.

but I snort-laughed (you know, the thing you do when you laugh at something but try to smother it up so people around you don't look at you) so hard that my boss from 4 cubes away came over to make sure I wasn't choking.

Italyn and ILiquid, love the box design. I have an access cab with two "similiar" openings under the rear jump seats. Looks like i will have to go start measuring to see if 2 8" or maybe even two nice 6' will fit. Seriously nice work! subbed!
