How do you heat your house?

A 55 Gallon burn barrel in the living room.







Just kidding. A buddy of mines dad has a coworker that got the power shut off and hooked his generator up in the garage to power a heater in his room...but needles to say the fumes from the generator filled up the house and about killed him he was in a coma for a day or so.

 

DAMN!

Pellet stove is what I use. And yes you can run the pellet stove without power if you get the conversion kit you run it off of a car battery when the power is out.

 

Just in general it seemed most were talking about fireplaces and furnaces as heaters.

 

So the hopper is needed for it to function

 

I live in BC , there is wood everywhere , a woodstove = free heat

No , I have 2 woodstoves , 1 on the main floor we use all the time and one in the basement we use when it gets really cold .

I also have radiant heated floors where the water is heated electrically

 

Free is ALWAYS good!

No , not in my house , but forced air is not uncommon here .

 

No the sign shows me where to stop when I back the Taco in. JK it's an upside down stop a head sign that was in the garage when we bought the house. But some ready to burn wood does get stored under the arrow so I don't have to go outside to get more all the time in the winter. Then just refill the pile once in a while. We get a assortment of evergreens. I drop a tree & cut it into 15" rounds and load 1/4 to 1/2 cord into the PreTaco and bring it home. Then I Cut the rounds into quarters (like you see behind the PreTaco and stack it next to the garage for a while. Then it gets split and put on the north side of the house. The wood I cut this summer will get burned this winter.

That sounds like the cottonwood that grows around here. Cottonwood smells nasty when you burn it.
The densest wood I've seen is Mountain Mahogany. They let us clear out an area where a housing development was going to be built the first year we lived here. That stuff burns real hot & long.

 

The Ohia tree is also a nice wood for building posts/columns and it to can be twisty and very attractive, a lot of people on the Big island of Hawaii have Ohia as exterior and interior posts
