AR build

I think this weekend I am going to start my first AR build. As most of you know, I am an AK guy, and I will always be an AK guy. However I see the benefits of an AR over the AK, just as there are benefits of the AK over the AR. I am a firm believer in the right tool for the job. I am going to the Lewisville gun show and see what they have. Right now I am going to look for a stripped lower and a trigger group. This build is going to take a couple of months, as funds become available. I am going to use this as my build log.

buy the stripped lower, and then get everything else here and save yourself some money, 4-5 of my buddies run these kits with zero problems out of any of them

the best mod IMO you can do is to install an aftermarket grip, ...the "stock" AR grips are horrible... i'd go w/ a magpul MIAD, ...just go w/ the grip of your choice..

 

Well today I started my AR build. PArts bought today were:

Spikes Lower receiver parts kit - 64.00 from AIM surplus

Waiting for Palmetto to get more complete uppers in.......

 

how do pmags fit in the lower? tight, drop free? aluminum mags?

 

P-Mags fit snug enough not to have much wobble but loose enough to drop free, Metal mags are a bit looser for obvious reasons.

What are you wanting to do with your AR? As I assume you have a lot of AKs, you might consider a longer range precision-type build. 18" or 20", PRS or similar stock, geissele or other trigger, nice optic, etc. It's awful fun to ring a gong out to 600+ yds with no recoil time after time after time.

Definitely the direction of my next build.

 

I am planning on a 16" carbine build chambered in 5.56. I am wanting something that is more accurate outside of 200 yds, but is light enough to carry for distance. I am working with a group of guys who are all ex military, current police, regular guys(I fall into this category) that will teach and impart knowledge about tactics, safety, long range shooting,and various other skills that each member brings to the group. The group is AR centric as all of these drills are based around what our military currently uses. They are trying to get me ready for SWAT school this summer.

Notice on the lower, the double stamp, this is what made this a blemished receiver.

Coming tomorrow I will have 4 p-mags, and a DSA mil spec stock kit.

If you truly want accuracy beyond 200 yards you would do well to get a barrel that is longer than 16". The shortened AR carbine was designed for close-in work. The M-16 that was expected to be effective to 300 yards has a 20" barrel. You also lose muzzle velocity with the shorter barrel which becomes more critical beyond 200 yards as the velocity drops off over distance.

I doubt you will notice a difference shooting under 500 yards

If your looking for a lighter build dont forget about the "light weight" uppers.

the military "M4" actually has a shorter barrell (14") than many civilian semi autos (which are frequently 16")... the shorter the barrell, generally the higher twist rate needed to put enough RPM on the round for good stabilization...
