I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Well .. small win today, I actually got my homemade 4wd computer to control transfer case and front diff. :D
And I have separate control for center diff lock for AWD but that will be fully tested when I find transfer case
Now if I want to convert pre-runner to 4wd I just need mechanical parts
No ATRAC had been harm in my testing :p

Damn, just read this whole thread, makes me want to do this, so when you do the FJ & the Crawler, you have to get both new front and rear driveshafts, correct?!

Also, if I got an FJ T-Case, could I send it to you or would it just be easier to take one that you already have?!

Since you're located in Cali, bringing it to you to do a swap would be a out of the question, little far!

But, is there anyone that could do something like this (preferrably on the east coast area), slightly outside of my expertise for skills!

    Awesome discovery!

As for driveshafts, you will need to shorten the rear.... Or just go with a totally new one piece driveshaft, and retube the front to make it longer.

As far as an install... if your up for the drive bring it on down! :D (hey atleast I'm on the east coast... :D )

How do you guys reroute the exhaust, so that a one piece driveshaft will work?!

Well, this might be next years summer project, and I'd be good for a nice road trip down, especially with something like this, I wouldn't want to f-it up!

We have a couple manual shift transfer cases for 2005+ Tacoma/4runner. These bolt right up to the stock transmission. PM for details.

Unless these transfer case's are FJ case's, you don't have manual case's for the 05+ Tacoma. Also, the T case for the 4th gen 4Runner came in 2 variants. One was the full time 4wd version that is a bit longer than the standard t case and in that situation you need to modify the drive shafts not to mentions all the electronics involved. The other was a part time case that was fully electronic.

be careful if your supplying people with these case's as there are subtle difference's that can wreak havoc when trying this swap. Just because they seem to bolt right up, it does not mean that they will work for the application intended.

My truck is an AT so if I find a TC from an AT FJ it will bold right up? Just need to create an opening in the console? How does that affect the electronics related to the rotary switch? On my wishlist for down the road a bit> How big of a deal ($$$) is it to do the twin stick conversion? Thanks

Those will not work unless they are top shift case's. Most of those case's are forward shift case's that shift from the back of the transmission like this '07 case that we converted while in Australia. What is needed here are top shift case's found in FJ Cruisers.

Here is the build thread for this truck, an '07 Hilux from Australia.

    http://www.rocksolidtoys.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38

We had to go to a junk yard to find a top shift case that we could pull the shift rod out of. The only ones the w could find were right hand drop case's not the left hand drop we needed. so we bought one and took it apart along with the '07 case and made the only top shift left hand drop '07 T case in a Hilux at the time. We pulled this case from a Prado.

    DSC02946640x480_3a91f1834520c16fcc8557510f58823aa5e16973.jpg

At the time, the only left hand drop '07+ top shift t case for an automatic Hilux.
    DSC02967640x480_24e43d9860f439e72265c81a2def726d5011d508.jpg

Also, the other thing we found while doing these crawler installs in Australia is that while the bolt pattern for the t case is the same going to the back of the transmission, these diesel trucks usded the old A340F 4 speed auto transmissions and not the A750F 5 speed auto tranny that we use over here. Will that make a difference? No, not if that case has been converted from a forward sift to a top shifting t case.

I've seen your work and it is very good. Just want to make sure that we are all on the same page. Have seen and talked to many people that have gotten wrong information and worse, wrong t case's for their swaps.

Yes, that is the case you need. I'm in Huntington Beach as well so I can show you what is needed. There are electronics that you will need to fool with. Go here to find out what you will need to do to complete this swap successfully.

I just have a few laying around the shop so I figured if it could benefit someone... I'll try and snap a picture of the transfer cases we get.

I like what you do for the Toyota community and love that you took the time to go that one step further to help out others. If those case's are top shift case's thats great. There are a number of people who can benefit from them. If they are forward shift case's they can be modified to a top shift case but it's not cheap. Need to use another case to get it done like we did in Australia.

If they are forward shift case's, give me a call and we can work something out if you want to sell them. I can modify them to work in a Tacoma or 4Runner.

Anyway, keep up the good work on those Diesel swaps. It's AWSUM!!!

awsumdc, you're definitely right...The two Hilux t-cases I have in the shop are not top shifters. The Prado's are top shifters though. I'll try and edit my earlier posts. We have five more '10 Hilux D-4D's coming in today so I'll see if they're the same as the '07+...
