Stock OEM Oil Drain gasket

Changing my Mobil 1 Synthetic and filter today to install my Fumoto oil drain valve. The reason I had never changed the original oil drain plug gasket was because it was stuck to the oil pan. Got it off with a putty knife. It is aluminum. Or more correctly aluminium. I have not decided yet but likely to replace it with a fiber composite, nylon or copper.....leaning toward copper as I never want to have to replace it for the remaining life of the truck.

 

i don't know if you saw it on there but there is a small layer of fiber or whatever on both sides.
i bought a pack of 10 from a yota parts site and just change it everytime time.

 

Judd94, I inspected it carefully, it is 100% aluminum with - suprisingly - black paint on both sides.

 

why would you change it? I dont understand, I have never changed that in any of my other vehicles..

 

The Fumoto gasket never needs to be changed.

 

1999 tacoma, never changed the "washer". I was in the same boat. I was told by the stealership to change it every time, which I didn't(Ido my own oil changes) and I said what the hell, lets see what happens. No leaks. Aluminum washer, just search on here and see what everyone else thinks about it. It's been discussed before. If it doesn't leak and isn't broke, don't fix it.

 

Unless a washer is a crushable type, no need to change it with each oil change. I just installed and found the copper seemed to give a very good seal with compressing, so I used it.

 

Never change your oil drain gasket? Seriously? I change it every time. In fact, the one time I did not change it I had a slow drip. Also, I know when I had the dealer do my first couple of changes they also replaced the gasket.

 

25,000 miles and same gasket, not a drop.

 

I have been in the same boat, a "crushable washer" was common on my previous 2 Volkswagens, one air cooled one not. My Tacoma has never had an oil leak from the drain plug. Cam seals...yes, drain plug no. So buy a new washer for the drain plug if it makes you sleep better at night, but in my 6 years of owning my 3.4 V6 I was concerned but never replaced the washer, and never had a leak out of the deain plug. Good question! In fact, Fumoto now sells an oil drain valve with the exact right angle elbow I was looking for, except it's only offered on a valve that does not fit the Tacoma. Maybe soon they will expand it to other valve models. I'll see if I can find a pic of it.....

 

Here it is. It is called an "L type", as opposed to the "N type" which has the nipple dropping straight down.

 

i've changed oil on hundreds of cars and probably changed 3 drain plug gaskets. i wouldn't change it, i have no plans to change the gasket on my truck unless it leaks. properly tightened, the orig gasket will last quite awhile

 

Same as "monkeys uncle" , I was told to change it every time bought an extra just in case, used the old one and it never leaks and I do not over tighten it, just the usual snug and 1/4 turn.....

I used the gasket that came with the plain Fumoto valve, no N or L, with no problems. It is farther out of harms way by being slightly shorter and it drains right in the drain pan with no splatter or mess. Save a few bucks and just get the regular one. Model F-103

OT, one filter I bought from the stealer had the fiber typewasher in the box, the 10 I bought online came without so guess I need to pick some up.

 

I for one am tired of the oil flow splashing out of my drain pan so I got the one with the nipple......with 5/8" hose attached and then the 5/16" hose attached to the oil filter drain I don't plan to touch the stuff anymore. I put a screw cap over the nipple as well as the valve body to keep water and dirt/debris out of it.

 

I just left mine stuck to the pan...hahah... never had a leak.

 

The small stream out of my Fumoto doesn't splatter and a reused 6oz cup under the filter trap while I pull and replace the rubber plug and I'm done in about 5 min. without a drop of oil on the hands. To each their own.
