Moving to Atlanta for work need some advice

Need some advice from some Atlanta locals. I'm moving to the Atlanta area for work around Lakewood? Need suggestions on some nice safe neighborhoods to look at for a house to rent. Not a permanent move just for 8-9 months. Any help is greatly appreciated

 

do you have a $$$ amount you are looking at or a limit?

 

Probably around $1,000 - 1,500 per month. I'm flying blind I have no Idea what housing is like in Atlanta

 

I dont think you are going to be wanting to looking around Lakewood for housing. Make sure to look at neighborhoods north of I-20 if you are wanting to stay in downtown Atlanta. From there, i would just check whatever websites are out there that have community/neighborhood reviews. Let me know what specific area you might be looking at

 

just be careful...the neighborhood you chose to live in may be nice but cross the street and i can get pretty bad...i used to live a little north of ATL and you just really need to know which streets are ok to drive on and which aren't

 

X2 Like I was saying, check whatever websites out there where you can see ratings for certain neighborhoods

FWIW, I am about half an hour north of Atlanta, but I am down there all the time

 

I have another vote for you for the Marietta area.
Also, you could try the Vinings area (we've been here for seven years), pretty close to Atlanta, easy access via I-75/I-85 and/or I-285.

Try looking in buck head, one of the nicer areas in the area.

 

pricey though, for sure. and decidedly "hipster", but if you're into that...

 

You definitely don't want to live anywhere around Lakewood.

...unless of course you're cool with drive-by shootings and stuff.

Where will you be working?

In Atlanta we don't measure distance in miles, we measure distance in minutes.

For example you could live 5 miles from work and it takes you 30 minutes to get there. My commute for example is 25 miles and it takes me about 35 minutes to get to work.

 

It could be said snobby, with a southern vibe, but not hipster. It is an affluent area to live in

 

Hipsters live more in east Atlanta (Little 5 points, Decatur, Virginia Highland)

Buckhead is more upscale like he said ^^^

Ive lived inside and outside of the perimeter for a couple of decades. If you have kids in school there are specific areas you'll need to consider. You shouldn't have trouble finding a nice place within your budget. If you want I'll chat with you by phone to give you an idea of who lives where. Atlanta's a great place but like any other city you need to be aware of what's going on around you. PM me and I'll give you a shout tomorrow.

I've lived here my whole life. I'm an OTP kid (grew up in Cobb County). I could never live in the city but I do visit it quite frequently and have my entire life.

Hipsters can't afford to live in Buckhead, that's why they live in East Atlanta where it's cheaper but still ITP (inside the perimeter) Buckhead has always been an affluent area and has been very "steady"

East Atlanta is very transitional. One street might be ghetto and run-down while the next street over will be more affluent with nicely renovated homes. It's very diverse in terms of Rich people, young people, old people, poor people and everything in between.

West Atlanta and South Atlanta IMO have a lot of rough neighborhoods you don't want want to be driving in after dark. My dad used to work in Southwest Atlanta when my parents lived here in Atlanta.

West Atlanta is starting to get some people moving in and renovating places and improving it slightly however the "turn around" there is still in its infancy and was greatly hampered by the economic downturn.

Thanks for the info guys, it's a good jumping off point for me, I work in film and have some very long hours and I want an area that i feel comfortable leaving the wife and the dogs by her self. Keep the suggestions coming. Thanks again

 

I'm used to travel time by minutes and not miles, my 32 mile commute is between an hour to an hour and a half thanks to LA traffic
