Access vs. Crew Cab

This coming spring, I will hopefully be buying myself a 40th birthday present... a 2012 Tacoma! Always wanted a truck but never had one.

I hang onto vehicles for years. So I want to buy something that I will have no regrets over for 10+ years. I need to make sure I do this right!

Anyhow, I have it narrowed down to a Super White TRD Off-Road. I really want an access cab, but after looking at them, wonder if it's going to be a pain in the ass for my daughter (8 y/o) to get in and out of.

Truthfully, the layout and space (not to mention the rear seats themselves, plus the extra side curtain airbags) of the crew cab would suit us better. But I just don't like the look of the longer cab.

Any input in this matter is appreciated! Thanks.

 

DC is the way to go if you got kids, really when there 8 years old more so. Plus its easier to just open the back door from outside

 

there may be enough room for your kid now but as she gets bigger she will be cramped in the access cab

I had a previous gen Access cab Tacoma and a 2nd gen Double Cab. The access cab was nice for putting stuff in the back, but it really is not comfortable to ride back there. You will just need to decide if you will have people riding in the back or not.

Also, Double Cabs seem to hold their value a little better, but they both hold it extremely well.

I have a 2010 access cab. I built a platform for the back and my dog stays back there. I would not consider the back of the access cab suitable for people. Although I think the access cab looks better you will appreciate the double cab in the long run, especially if you plan on using the back to transport people.

 

I like my access cab, but i don't have kids. A double cab would be much better for you.

 

I haul my 5 year old nephew everywhere in my dlc. Its worth the extra money and looks better.

 

I dont have kids, (I'm still fairly young.).. but even I wish I had gotten a DC.. There's times the AC gets annoying.. For instance.. anytime you go shopping and have to put something in the back seat.. If a car parks close, it pretty much prevents you from getting the buggy in between the two doors.. I love my access cab, but if I could go back I would've gotten the DCLB.. Now obviously you have a kid.. Kids grow up.. (fast).. and eventually she won't be comfortable back there.. I'd go with the DC.. Sometimes looks don't matter.. lol

 

If you can look past the looks of a double cab, you will realize that it's much more versatile than an access cab.

I also agree that the access cab looks better but bought a DC after trying to sit in the access cab back seat. I have 3 grandchildren and realized that the AC just would not work for us.

 

Here's my useless opinion ...

I love the Access Cab. It suits me well, and I think they look sharp. My six year old loves riding in the back, but...

He likes riding in the back because it's "fun". The fun part will fade, and comfort will be an issue. If there is more than one passenger, I would definitely get a crew cab.

Although I like the look of the AC over the DC in general, I think the DC looks amazing when outfitted with a topper - better than a topper on an AC.

 

more versatile for hauling people but not cargo... like everyone else has said it depends on what you're going to do with the truck. haul people = double cab, haul cargo = access cab
