Wheel stuck on left rear

Hi all. Brand new here. I'm trying to do a bit more DIY to save some $ and rotating my tires fit my DIY capabilities. Mind you I'm no mechanic, I ran into a problem that could be dire in an emergency situation. Had truck on jack stands, front left whell popped off no prob. Rear wheel stuck. I've tried loosening lugs, dropped truck and rolled back: no go. Tried mule kicking the shit out of it...to no avail. How do I get the bastard off?

im assuming the lugs dont spin at all. i couldnt get my lug nuts to spin off ALL the way. they were stripped. doesnt sound like that is the problem though. just thought id mention it.

 

oh lugs are stuck, try soaking with a penetrating oil and getting back to em tomorrow

 

My first gen pulled this once upon a time. Beat the hell outta it. Assuming that the lugs are all off and the wheel is just stuck to the rear drum, thats what happened to mine.

 

Nope, the lugs are all off. I have this feeling like I'm forgetting something simple. There are no locking lug nuts...like I said they are all off. Is there some kind of security hub? Maybe not a hub, but some kind of cap or washer thing? It looked a bit different than the front wheel...I'll take some pics if you'd need clarification. Thanks for the responses everyone.

 

o all the lug nuts are off huh. usually a little rocking of the tire back and forth will get it loose. im not sure whats keeping it bound so tight.

 

In my case the wheel was put on by the dealership the day before I received the flat that inspired me to remove my wheel. Once the lugs were off I couldn't pull the wheel off. I was on a construction site, I used a Backhoe to hold the truck up, got underneath and hit it with a hammer, pryed on it with a bar, even hit it with some skids. None of that worked I called the dealership and raised 7 kinds of hell. Ended up using the tractor to pull it off using a strap while it was attached to the back hoe. Went home and had them pull the other wheels off and of course the others came off with ease. However the pass rear drum had the marks where the wheel had been stuck previously. No explanation was ever reached just a freak occurrence. You can try jacking the truck up and droping it quickly with a floor jack. Be very careful, put some lugs on half way or better before trying this.

 

Drift and hit a curb, itl pop right off.

Soak the front of the drum in wd40, then assuming the truck is on solid jack stands, go under the truck and boot the tire.

If that doesn't work park on a sidewalk with a full curb, jack up your truck a couple inches. Put a scissor jack in between the curb and the inside of the tire and pop it off.

I like this curb idea! I don't have many here but if I'm in the cities i'll remember this.

 

I read on here that the rear wheels tend to get corroded to the drums. Beat the hell out of it and put never seize on the back of the rim when you put it back.

Ok, well this is how it worked. I lucked out and got a free tire rotate coupon in the mail from my favorite local garage. What timing!

Anyhow, just so I could post some kind of conclusion, I asked the tech how the heck they get these stuck wheels off. He said once it's on their lift, they use a pry bar from behind the tire to pop it off.

He said by no means should you ever kick a wheel from behind when it's on a jack (as you will have three outcomes, one will be deadly). He didn't recommend using a sledge hammer to the side wall because you can damage your wheel (if you miss) or your tire (create a bulge). So those of us without lifts have to take chances I guess.

I dunno what I would have done if I had a flat and my wheel was stuck. I suppose carry a pry bar...anyone have any good ideas where to mount a pry bar in a taco so it's not in the way or rolling around the bed?

i would have used a rubber mallet on the inside of the wheel. and beat the flying fuck out of it.

In case anyone is still having an issue still....

I hadn't rotated in a couple of years, kept outside. Don't drive many kms so no need to. Rust from drum and corrosion from aluminum wheel made quite the glue.

I tried the above, here's what got it off without getting under it.

Wd40 soak, then pound on wheel (with 10lb sledge using a towel and wood to protect finish) in a rotational direction to break the fused rust a bit. Then a 5 foot digging bar to pry between tire and leaf spring (watch you don't pinch brake lines). Front side then back switching a dozen times. Finally popped off and I fell on my ass. Ass pad recommended.

 

When I changed out my winter wheels with my summers about 2 weeks ago all mine where stuck and just used a pry bar to get them off.

 

i kick and use a rubber mallet. thankfully, it only happened on the woman's old car

 

Next time use a dead blow hammer on the inner lip of the wheel. Beat it outwards as you rotate the wheel.
