Big Bear trip

GF and i are thinking about going up to big bear this weekend but neither of us has a 4x4 she owns a jeep and i have the tacoma and neither of those are 4x4 and my question to you guys is would we b ok with either of these vehicles, and also what would we need we might end up taking the truck and i wants to try wheeling if possible. So we want to know what we might have to get for the truck.​

 

yea i know its verry sad thats why i am thinking about trading my truck for a 4x4 but i also have a secobd gen tacoma that is 4x4 but we cannot take that one because o need seat belts. (long story) but to answer your question yes they are both rwd

 

her jeep is a commander and this is what happend in may to the truck.....
airbags blew and as you may know already, the seat belts lock so that is why i need new ones. But the truck is already fixed ......

But anyhow that is what the reason why i cannot take it. not because i rip out the seat belts

 

I doubt you'll need 4x4 up there right now. Either vehicle would do fine. Unless it's snowing hard...

 

they just got about a foot of snow so i wouldent sugest going up there with 2wd especially not to wheel

 

It's not like they leave the snow sitting on the roads.

 

Not to mention highs in the mid to upper 40s, even low 50s, there won't be much snow up there after a couple days.

 

You'll be ok with the tacoma, I've been there bone stock with snow, no chains. ( not on trails though)

Oh, I didn't see the wheeling part. Wheeling a two wheel drive in snow is retarded. I'm sorry, but it is.

A dusting or an inch or two, whatever. (But still potentially difficulty and potentially dangerous, especially alone.)

well like i said long story dude but rain and minor overcorrections and a 3 foot concrete wall caused it to b short.

well it has been snowing lately and they will get more snow this coming weekend.

hopefully i guess we will b taking the tacoma

well if i do go offroading there will be plenty of people to help me out i think lol.
i am just wondering what we will b needing such as fule toe ropes and so on, i ask because i have never been wheeling

 

Ok, you've never been wheeling, and you want to take a 2 wheel drive vehicle out in the snow by yourself. Have some common sense dude! Don't assume there will be people to help, and don't put yourself in a potentially dangerous situation.



And there's gas stations in Big Bear, as well as a K-Mart.

 

you really shouldent want to depend on others to have to be pulling you out the whole day that kind of puts a damper on peoples day

 

Very true guys and trust me i have been thinking about telling her not to go at all because of weather conditions and because we are not prepared yet. but she is in the army and she wants to be a part of this trip. But im sure we will figuer something out

 

yeah im really not trying to be a dick i promise but i have lived in lake arrowhead(just under Big Bear) for 19 years and im warning you right now there is nothing locals hate more then a bunch of flat landers coming up the mountain expecting people to pull them out and getting stuck on the hwy which creates a big headache for locals who need to travel down the hill for work

They require chains up there on 2 wheel drive vehicles, even when it's not snowing sometimes. Even 4x4s are required to at least have chains in the vehicle. The CHP won't let you up the mountain if they are requiring chains and you don't have them.

 

I was coming down the 38 in February earlier this year and it was snowing and a little icy (heavy snow, there was snow on the road). A Stater Bros. truck was ahead of me (without chains) and lost control and slid across both lanes blocking traffic for a couple hours while a tow truck capable of pulling it out got there.

 

And get some sandbags for the bed to add weight and you should be fine as long as you remember your restrictions and dont try to go offroad.
