Toyota Oil Filter (Made in Thailand) vs. the competition........

Probably not since the outside diameter is 3.65 in and mine is 3 in. However I found that the HP-2009 is the same diameter and thread size but is 1.25 in taller.

My next filter will be the HP-2009.

I try to get oem filters whenever there is a 15% dealer coupon.

I have that same problem when i crank my truck up and drive at low idle it makes a very quite ticking sound only for like 30 seconds when i barely press the gas. and it only dose it when its cold and this is the first time its started doing it and i just tried a mobile one filter. i use to use fram . i think they are all garbage till after the vid. post !!! looks like i'm going back to Yota filters for now on !

 

Denso Aftermarket also makes a filter PN 150-1003 that fits everything from Chrysler 300s to Tacomas to Tundras.

There is info here along with the dissection shots. Looks like it has a different construction from the Denso Toyota OEM YZZD3 filter.

I wrote the oil filter comparison you found on StumbleUpon, and while I didn't break down the filters the same way as the main post in this thread (and that post is awesome), I did do a few things differently.

1. I measured the surface area of the filter medium, because I felt that a larger surface area generally makes for a better filter.

Filters are a compromise - they must clean the oil, but they must also have a high flow rate for times when the engine is really running hard or during start-up when oil doesn't flow quickly.

2. I looked at each filter material under a microscope.

While I had hoped to get a sense of the ratio to filter thread size to void space size, it really wasn't practical to measure. However, I did get a sense of the material. Wix, K&N, Toyota, and Fram all seem to use essentially the same material in at least one of their filters. Fram's "extra guard" filters use a thicker, heavier material that isn't quite as good (in my opinion) as the standard Fram filter, even though the ExtraGuard promises better performance...as I said above, a filter has to flow oil or it won't clean. Thicker, heavier filter paper isn't necessarily a good thing.

3. I measured filter canister surface area, which relates to cooling.

Filters help cool oil, and bigger filters are better.

While I'm not trying to take anything away from the filter comparison leading this thread, I think it's worth a look. It's a reasonably short read.

I use the toyota filter 90915-YZZG1. I just bought 2 more yesterday and noticed that it says it made in the USA. I was under the impression that all toyota filters where made in japan. After reading this thread, realized that there is the one made in Thailand.

90915-YZZD1. I understand that the one made in Thailand is just a bit longer. Is there any other difference? And is the USA one just as good as quality as the Thailand one.

 

I'm pretty sure you can't order YZZG1's anymore from Toyota...you must have gotten a couple that were sitting on someone's shelf for a while.

They are a bit shorter, but otherwise I do believe they are identical. As far as quality, everything Toyota touches (except maybe accelerator pedals, LOL) is generally pretty good.

 

Thanks tacomahq, your the only one that chimmed in. After calling all over town, the yzzG1 replaced the yzzD1. Thats what thay are telling me. But your right anything Toyota makes is the best !

90915-YZZD3? That's the filter we got from Olathe for our comparison, and that's the one made in Thailand.

 

I run these on my truck. Offers increased capacity, while remaining interchangeable with the 90915-YZZG1.

 

I have been using Wix filters on my Tacoma 2003 4x4 V6 and she is currently approaching 160,00 .... She has done great. In the beginning all I had to do was change the oil, air filter .... and did nothing to her until 121,000 miles at which time I changed my Timing Belt, water pump, belts, and spark plugs and only my front brakes. My spark plugs still had 10 percent left on them as well as my front brake pads. I have always had Toyota and have always been happy with the product .....

 

Great comparison and hats off to you for the work you put into this. I used some dog meat filters in the past but will use OE from now on to keep the engine and synthetic flowing smoothly.

Fram filter is going back to walmart! Think I will stick with Toyota or the Wix.
