Rear differential ...exploded? Help?!

    So, im driving down the 15.. all stoked to meet up with rcfreak & friends.. and all of a sudden i hear loud noises from under my truck, and an intense viberation that shakes my whole truck, i quickly started to get off the road.. a quick look in my rear view mirror and i see a bunch of smoke.. after stopping and jumping out.. i look under too see (the part that connects the drive shaft to my diff (..i think..) is pouring smoke..

    anyone know what could have happened? there was also differential fluid EVERYWHERE

    I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
    It could be the pinion bearing that failed or the pinion itself snapped. Your really not going to know until it's opened up. Hopefully it didn't jack up the axle housing or your going to be replacing the whole rear end.

    Agreed, i think it goes up today.. Hoping for a good verdict..
    IF it is shot, i am going to go through toyota again to get a new locking differential, I dont really trust any other way of putting a new locker in.

    it looks like either pinion snapped or the bearing failed as Jerry said


    installing a diff isnt too hard if you have the know how and set the backlash correctly


    also the 8"diffs are known to be unreliable

    I would; unless you have a shop that you really trust. If the diff isn't set up correctly it will just break again.

    Hopefully your gears and locker are alright.

    if youre under warranty have toyota do it

    if not look up a guide to take out your 3rd member (its quite simple)

    and then check these guys out, they can assemble and ship a 3rd and you ship yours back as the core

    Oh if it's under warranty fight it your lift did not cause that. Hell they sell new ones with lifts at the dealer with a warranty I'm sure they will have one at the dealer you go to. If they try that bull just go into the show room and ask if they offer a warranty with the ones they have on the lot? It might be a pain but they will cover it.
