I'll start. The Dodge Ram that I drive sometimes to and from the market had a "Smoke Switch" installed by it's owner. If this were me I would have turned it on and show that woman what real smoke and "Pollution" looks like even tho a Prius is just used for good PR for Toyota and are horrible for the environment.

but the argument is that the carbon footprint of the creation of the battery used in the prius is larger than that of a normal engine's output

All the carbon and pollution put into the air by shipping the products to the final build plant, like all cars. But the big thing is mining for the products used in the batteries, they strip mine destroying miles and miles of Earth to make an environmentally friendly car and the production of the batteries. Which happens all the time and isn't just caused by the Prius production but is mostly hype for Toyota and hippies.
