Everything was brand new, I used lots of lubrication, used a brand new microfiber cloth (1 came in the kit and I bought another one), used a microfiber terry cloth for wax.

Honestly what you're looking at is probably just superficial.
Nothing is perfect, my truck had em too.

I don't what your plans with your truck are, but unless you plan on keeping in the garage and never driving it it's going to get scratched, chipped, dinged, assholes are going to run things into in parking lots, birds are going to shit on it.

Sorry, just my 2 cents. (I used to know every last scratch and knick on my truck) Now I just do my best to take care of it, and try not to sweat the small things.

Next time you wax try and use several microfiber clothes while claybaring and waxing. Use probably 4 while claybaring (1 for wiping off the majority of the lubrication and the other to clean off the rest) then half way through I get two fresh.
With waxing i probably go through 8-10 microfiber clothes. The thing is, if you get too much dried wax buildup on the cloth that can scratch the paint too.

Don't let your cloth get dry. Don't use too much pressure when you rub, unless you're working on a scratch. Spread the pressure out with your palm Ive never had a problem with using a single cloth for applying.... just don't get it dirty, and if your rag starts to get black, thats probably dirt, definitely flip it over or get a new one.

I'm gonna go on a limb and guess you have a black, or darkly colored truck. They're the worst.

They def are superficial, and you're completely right. I have been trying to not be so OCD about my truck and just enjoy it... But it's so hard when I have every penny I worked my ass off to make into it.

My truck Is actually silver, so the scratches are not possible to even see during the day or to anyone who isn't trying really really hard to see them. It needs to be at night, under a streetlight and you need to be at eye level with the hood and try really hard to find them. It sounds really really dumb. But the trucks only 3 weeks old and I just can't help it haha

I've had mine since March, and I have just now gotten over being OCD about it. I used to be pissed for days when I'd hear a car throw a rock at my hood  once I started taking it out in the dirt and through trails I got over it real quick.

I plan on claybarring and waxing mine tomorrow, can't wait :D

That's exactly how I feel! Can't wait to get over it so I can take it through some trails. Thanks for the advice, good luck on your detail!

There needs to be a correction in this thread!

The process of washing is what causes the majority of the swirl marks in you paint's finish.

When you washed your truck, did you use the 2 bucket method? Did you wash using circular motions or back and forth motions?

If not then I guarentee you washing the truck caused the swirls.

    COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS:

    1. You need to use an orbital polisher to get rid of swirl marks but that is not true. You can eliminate MINOR scratches and swirls by hand using a pre waxing glaze(very nonabrasive polish)

    2. I can just throw my microfiber towel in the dryer when it's done washing. NO The dryer will destroy any microfiber product!

I use the 2 bucket method and a back and forth motion when washing, I sheet the water off the paint's surface before drying and I dry the entire truck(Access Cab) with one 38"X19" microfiber towel.

No I didn't use the 2 bucket method, but I did use a brand new Mit and did NOT go in a circular motion. I didn't use the 2 bucket method because the truck only had 200 miles on it when I detailed it and it was basically clean so there was no really difference in dirt between the body and the rocker panels.

I appreciate the advice on the misconceptions I will certainly keep that in mind and use the 2 bucket method from now on.

What "pre waxing glaze" do you suggest?

I was really paranoid about making swirls on my paint in the beginning and I was very, very careful. Thought I was doing pretty good until I got a good look at it under the street lights

I'm not too paranoid about the swirls anymore...more just the noticeable scratches and the acid rain damage bother the heck out of me. I tried clay bar, ultimate compound, and polish but that didn't help much (It actually left holograms where I used the compound) But then again, I'm no expert at detailing. Just kinda learning as I go. Oh well, nothing stays perfect forever I guess.

detergent doesnt hurt microfiber towels, fabric softener does.

you guys think toyota paint gets swirl marks easy? My subaru wrx would get swirl marks by looking at it. Hell, I could scratch the clearcoat with my fingernail, and I bite my nails.

I understand that it did not seem necessary to use the 2 bucket method because your trucks low mileage but chances are that the truck was built a few months before and spent A LOT of time outside and may have had significant rail dust.

Just my two cents. But regarding the pre waxing glaze, I use Meguiar's Ultimate Polish. It is a very light polish that is the same as a glaze.

Yes, it had lots and lots of rail dust. That's the whole reason I did the detail in the first place, so I could clay bar and remove it. Anyways, as I said, I will use the 2 bucket method next time. I didn't know about it, and thought using a brand new mit would be good enough.

Thanks, I will try that stuff too.
