MPG question: tire size/tread

Just curious which tire you guys think would get better mileage; a 285/75/16 all terrain type tire, or a 265/75/16 mud terrain type tire. Not a big issue, just trying to narrow my tire choices down after I put a lift on my 08'. Thanks for any input!

 

I was curious too. I'm about to switch from a 265/70/16 Revo AT (~44lbs) to a Cooper Discoverer S/T 255/85 (D ply 48lbs) or the KM2 255/85 (E ply 55lbs). I do alot of interstate driving so I dont want to murder my mpg, but then again if I'm not on the interstate I'm offroad so an MT is appealing.

 

are we talking a 1-2mpg difference in the 2? or 3+

 

tire weight only effects city mpg. Tread aggressiveness (rolling resistance) effects both city and hwy mpg. Choose accordingly.

 

I just put 265/75/16 km2's on (replaced michelin streets) and no big difference in mileage. I used to get 300 a tank (17 gal) now I get 260-280 depending on how I drive. Thats me using 17 gal tho and I have a 6spd so gas isn't great lol.

 

good to know. it's still going to be a tough choice. I guess since i have a winch and locker i dont really NEED an MT tire

but KM2's look so damn good!

haha I'm leaning towards them. I think they are the best looking tire for the second gen, I wish BFG still made the original KMs. I have a pair of those on my 76 chevy and they are awesome

 

OP i bet those two tires will be close. 265/75 MTs tend to be heavy so they are probably close to equal with the 285 AT.
and weight will greater effect a 4 banger
