Up in Winnipeg Canada we see -40 for about 2 months a year. I prefer Gas central heat as it not a dry heat like electric. My high efficiency furnace costs slightly more than electric and works faster with more even heat without the dry static problems from electric.

I poop in a bucket all summer long and sit it outside to dry. When winter comes around we bring our fire pit inside and open up the exterior hatch on our roof and burn what I have saved.

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
It's a pita making those end stacks. No need for it today, weatherman says it'll be 70*!

    Yep.
250 gal Fuel Oil Tank - Furnace - 4 zones of hot water baseboard heat (in a nutshell)

I grew up in Michigan where this kind of heat is unheard of (mainly forced air) so the whole system is very new to me. It took some getting used to but I actually like it.

Trying to quiet the system down a bit but from what I'm told; "nature of the beast" due to all the exspansion and contraction. Any ideas?

The house has a heat pump and the wood stove is going in next week. I figure cutting, splitting and stacking the wood should keep the beer off this winter.

Is it air trapped in the system ?

I have the same thing but a 400 gallon tank. This is pretty much the standard here, however a lucky few get to use a gas furnace. I would love to convert.

When I fill up (I fill at 1/4 tank) thats 300 gallons @3.20 (right now) a gallon + tax. 300 gallons lasts about 1.5 months.

Trapped air could be some noise, but I think he is referring to the expansion of the radiator fins. It makes a "ticking" sound but stops a few minutes after the heat comes on. Also the walls tend to creek a slight bit from the heat.

When I moved in, there was an old wood burning stove that was disconnected from a sealed off chimney. I bought a new stove and had it connected to the chimney. It works great, but the next morning we sometimes get a back draft where the air is coming back in, and the room smells like smoke. I think it has something to do with my house somehow getting negative pressure. Opening the windows will usually fix this, but its annoying as all hell.
