    Hello everybody,
I just noticed this today (I have 30k miles on my truck). There's a loud rattling that happens when I'm in 1st or 2nd gear, and going above 2k RPM. The rattling sounds like it's coming from the engine, maybe a little on the driver's side. I have a TRD CAI. I took a quick look under the hood and didn't seem see anything wrong.
Also don't know if this could somehow be related, but yesterday the oil plug fell out and all my oil drained out while I was offroading. Idiot Toyota dealership mechs didn't tighten it enough.
    Any thoughts?

Mine has had a rattling noise for a while, i cant figure out what it is. Ive been told on here to check where the air intake goes into the fender and check the hood latch but i haven't been able to figure it out, Ive got used to the noise.

Yeah, and also did some more searching around, and seems like many people have developed this rattling noise too...

    WTF?

Your oil drained out while offroading?

How long did you run the motor before you realized the oil had dumped on the ground?

Well I got back on the road, drove for like a mile or 2 until the oil light turned on and the engine shut down. I had no idea what was going on, so I kept turning the engine back on and trying to drive for like another quarter mile before I finally pulled over and figured it out. Hopefully the transmission is not ruined now...

I wouldn't be worried about the transmission, I'd be wondering when I'm getting a new engine!

Is this bad? After I put a new plug in and filled up the oil, I drove 130 miles back home...

i had the same thing with my K&N. turns out the cone filter was barely vibrating on the fender making all the noise. tighten down all your bolts/screws on the CAI and make sure the filter isnt rubbing on anything.

yes this is bad. You ran your engine without oil, then it died and you proceeded to keep starting it and running it until it died again. Im surprised its still running.

My redneck analysis, rod bearing is starving due to opened clearances.

You'll know for sure over time. Only way to find is tear it down and rebuild it.

I don't understand why so many don't get it... the oil light is the motor-is-already-dead light. You NEVER start it up after that. It only lights up after oil pressure drops below what the engine needs to survive. At least your truck kept going a while. It's even worse with 4 cyl Honda's, their lights come up at about 3 psi (because they make only about 5-10 psi at idle when warm), and the mains are toast by then.

I hope your joking. Yes it is really bad. As said above your motor is probably toast. I wouldnt tell the driving with no oil story when you take it in for a new engine

    OHHHHH!!

You sir have most likely fried or severely damaged an internal part. I'm guessing that it is the rod bearings since it rattles during acceleration and that is when the motor is under the most load.

You should have had some common sense and just called it quits the second that oil light came on.

I suggest you go get that engine checked out!

Okay scheduled an appointment for saturday. But other than the rattle in 1st/2nd gear, everything else felt/sounded normal on the drive back home...

Well, your engine was more than likely damaged...if you concider that to be a problem I guess it could be a bad thing.

i have a rattle while the rpm's climb in first and second. id don't think it's where the intake goes through the fender however because i had removed all the stuff from behind there for my snorkel installation.

the baffle or resonator thing gone the factory piping gone and the noise still persists. it sounds like a heat shield underneath to me but, they seem to be ok as well maybe its the flow master 40 series muffler as i have heard of people with this same rattling noise and it's actually coming from their muffler. just a thought

The gravity of the situation is it is extremely likely you have caused permanent engine damage, so if you can blame the dealership and actually get them to acknowledge they did not torque the drain plug properly have them get you a new engine.
