I am just starting to look for a double din navigation setup to put in my 2nd gen taco. I must say I do not follow this side of the tech industry at all and this may be part of my problem, but.. all of the units/vendors seem to be lacking somewhere.

I am just very surprised that even when your paying around $1,000 you are still getting a screen resolution of around 480x240 on a 6-7" screen. Really?

On top of that most of the GPS navigation screens look like a cluttered mess on screen and seem like they will be clunky to use.

That combined with the fact that every time I see something that might work, there are a lot of negative reviews about this or that not working, not syncing, navigation dropping, slow page loading, firmware lacking updates and the list goes on.

I really like to research my purchases to avoid that buyers remorse, especially on something like this, where the tech involved changes so fast, and what you have now is old news in a year. I'm shooting for the best bang for your buck head unit that is fully featured and will last me at least a few good years before its obsolete. This seems to be a really tall order, maybe I'm just being too picky but I don't want something that is going to be annoying to use every time I get in the truck.

Do you guys have any suggestions on a starting point? I found a few JVC's that were ok.

    ********Edit:

Found this Pioneer that seems to be closer to what im looking for: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130AVIC930/Pioneer-AVIC-X930BT.html?search=X930BT&skipvs=T

Wow and you can get it for $568 directly from Amazon, am i seeing this right? http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list...p?ie=UTF8&qid=1320347889&sr=1-1&condition=new

I would need that Metra adapter for the 87+ toyota? only like $5, then what adapter for the stearing wheel controls? Also would need to buy a camera since my truck is an 06.

    Anyone have this?

    *************

    My list of wants:

-GPS with traffic, lane assist. (my main reason for getting one, why do many of the GPS systems look like they are using 8 year old graphics?)
-Bluetooth and hands free calling capable
-saw some that were able to display netflix streaming from your phone, very cool for long trips.
-fast, no screen lag and page loading lag. (The JVCs seemed to be great in this area)
-nicer screen not dim in the daylight, and at least a decent resolution
-would like to be able to hook it up to my volume/steering wheel controls, you need an adapter i believe
    -back up camera capable
-able to stream Pandora or the like to it
-removable face/screen plate(this seemed rare but is nice for safety)

Thanks for taking a read, and I really appreciate any advice or suggestions you can give.

Yes, I just installed one after my previous Z110BT was stolen.

If you want traffic, you will need an add on, or the z130bt. Also includes HD radio.

Everything else I love about the X930 and Z130BT series, and they are the same except for the full screen vs 6" screen with stuff on the side.

Doubt you will find a removable face plate.

You will need to buy a camera, SWI adapter, and the Metra 87+ toyota harness, and a dash kit.

Yes, your Amazon price is correct. I got mine from them at $599 a couple weeks ago, but with the pioneer $100 rebate. I love the interface, but be aware there is an issue with the IOS 5 on an iPhone if you plan on using that. Check their site, or Avic411.com for details.

Cool thanks for the info, I plan on using my android phone. Do you know how compatable that is? I have read it works with most things, but not nexflix streaming? thats kind of a bummer..

No idea, I dont know anyone with an Android phone that rides in my truck often enough to test it. I know the cable it comes with has a USB and 3.5mm jack, but dont know how that would work with your phone.

Be careful with pioneer.. I have a pioneer Avic x 910 BT and I hate it. The guys at the local car audio shop told me The best brands these days are kenwood and alpine.

I've had a lot of problems with my headunit, and with pioneer you can forget about customer service. Alpine on the other hand, I could go to the local shop and they'll swap it out with a new one.

I am doing research because I want to replace my current headunit with one I won't hate.

thanks for the info, could you explain a little more about what you dislike about your current setup? I am curious because I went to go check one of the pioneers out but someone had password locked it to be funny so i couldnt play with it at all. Guy said he couldnt undo it and needed to replace the unit in store.. lol

I was looking around at built-in GPSs also.
An additional criteria I had was to be able to load additional maps, especially Baja. That seemed to be a major hangup for some units, that only accepted propriatary maps.
I also thought the mapping on some units was weak/too basic.
I eventually bought a large-screen Garmin, though did not build it in. It can take camera, audio and video input. It can output to FM, for stereo sound.
What swayed me was very good user interface, excellent mapping and ability to easily update maps, even with maps or tracks I created/modified in MapSource.
    Good luck.

It takes a long time to start up, it freezes every once in a while to the point where I have to turn off the truck and start it up again, I also don't like the iPod interface.. It could be easier and faster to use. The navigation isn't very good either.

The DNX-6180 is probably the closest to what you are looking for. The main reason I say that is that you listed GPS as the number one reason you are doing this upgrade. Kenwood runs Garmin GPS, and, honestly, nothing else is comparable. I prefer the Pioneer GUI, but for me Garmin GPS won out, and I am on my second DNX-61** headunit.

Is it perfect? No. But I haven't found one that is better for me.

I have the X930BT. It takes about 10-15 seconds to start the unit, mine never freezes, the DVD video is clean and crisp, bluetooth pairing is seamless, and the iPod interface is the best I have used. It is very intuitive and is super simple to use and have just enough adjustment to satisfy the average audiophile.

The Nav isn't the greatest, but it does work great. I have had zero issues with it. It will give some routes occasionally that differ from google maps.

In summary you can't go wrong with the X930BT for the price. I paid $550 from Amazon, sold my old unit to my bro for $200, and got the $100 mail in rebate through pioneer. So, $250 in my case for a full Nav unit. WIN!

Well i just called up Alpine and even though the guy didnt give me any real information, I sounds like there is a good chance that next years stuff will be *more* android compatable. So I think I will hold off until then. Would be great to have it fully supported like the iStuff

yeah i was just in this situation with the android compatiblity problem... doesnt seem there are many companies that have made a deck that will use a android phone with out using the ear phone jack. but i just ditched my pos Droid x2 about a hour ago. an since verizon wont upgrade me to the i phone4s for free i downgraded and got a regular phone again. so time to start looking at alpine again. i am trying to decide on the top of the line alpine one or the kenwood excelon one? also what do you need to get to make the satelight radio work with a aftermarket deck?

You should wait till the end of the month and pick up a Galaxy Nexus that will be coming to Verizon, then get a new Alpine in January that has android support! Sounds like the perfect plan!

i am making the switch to i phone eventually.. i am tired of the Droid market... they come out with a new version of the droid like every day. but still cant make software that works. I only had one app on mine. it was pandora and it couldnt handle that lol glad that alpine will support that market though because i know i coulndt find a deck that did. and their are a lot of droid phones out there.

Hmm, I cant comment on the Droids, as i have never used Motorola phones but the Galaxy Nexus is shaping up to be a pretty good phone. It shouldn't have any of the lame bloatware that the carriers love to put on them, or any funky interface changes. Just straight vanilla android 4.0 which looks good. I have an older Nexus one and it runs great with stock android.

I have the 900BT and really like it. Two dislikes are the 30 second startup time and the pioneer ipod cable was trash. Switched to an apple cable and no problems since. I like pioneers gps. I have a boyo rearview camera and it works perfectly. Using the pac steering wheel control module.

hey, i dont mean to thread jack but i got a question/small problem. i just got a pioneer sph-da01 (app radio) and ive been searching threads n google n you tube looking for an answer to bypass the parking brake dilema. ive tried the relay option n it doesnt work. the guy in youtube vid says to hook it up to ground side. but the instructions say "power" side of brake switch.

so besides installing a dummy switch, is there any other short cut for this problem?
    thanks
