dont necessarily have to be "off road" to use the locker....ie you can be on a snow covered road

ALL Tacomas (since 2009) have LSD, the same LSD... called TRAC & AUTO LSD in 2WD and TRAC in 4WD-HI.

The rear locker is (per Toyota) only for emergency stuck situations where one tire spins while the other is on solid ground... and use up to 5 mph (for safety). It can be turned on anytime (in L4 only if a 4WD) and driven at any speed... only problem is steering is harder and could bind since the two back tires can not turn seperately.

Why would you want to be locked on a snow covered road ?

4wd will be way more useful than a locker on snow. lockers are more for when one wheels in the air and you need to spin the one on the ground

a locker will not help you on a snow covered road, you'll just dig the rear tires in
but if it was frozen, you'd have no traction, and a lock wouldnt work either

I was thinking if one side had traction on snow and one side was spinning on ice

correction i'm guess i'm not talking about ATRAC, 4wd TRAC, hawaii TRAC, or nebraska TRAC, i'm talking about the good ol' fashon mechanical LSD that i can use in 2wd every day i drive my truck or in 4wd

Yep, thats what I did. Bought the Off Road for the goodies, and then pulled the hood, mirrors, and door handles. Bought the sport stuff from Toyota. The only part left is the Homertoshi. I did end up leaving the chrome rear bumper.

Now I have Off road stickers but sport stuff. Bet I confuse the hell out of some guys that look at my truck.:D

i think i read on another thread that the sport model rear springs have 4 "leafs", ..but the offroad has "3"?.. does this mean going w/ the sport, one would not be affected by the leaf spring TSB?

NO. All U.S. Tacomas have the 3 leaf pack. Canadian Tacos may have a 4 leaf pack, from what I read here.

Per some web site list of packages (I think Christian posted): Off Road Tacomas have suspension 'tuned' for off road and Sport Tacomas have suspension 'tuned' for the street.

so, does that mean even '12 tacomas, the leaf spring TSB was never incorporated?... i wonder if that is true, ..can that be used as leverage in negotiating a price? i want to be armed w/ as much info as i can. thanks.
