I can't take credit for those ideas. While this guy throws a lot of useless political discussion into his blogs, there is a ton of good info here.

If the hillbillies can do it then so can we :D There are plenty of videos, books, and articles of how to. Actually it is legal here in Ohio (so I am told) so long as the still is not capable of producing more than a gallon over "x" amount of time.

I'll throw my 2 cents in here. I was with 3rd Group and we lived out of our GMV's in Afghanistan for a week at a time. Lessons learned:

-All the batteries you carry around for months die from the cold and heat when you need them. Restock often.
-Suunto's are nice but they eat up batteries. Make sure you have a spare and see above.
-Bug out Bag's should be secured with a caribiner and 550 cord to the vehicle. When your truck rolls over (from an accident, bomb, flash flood) you don't want to go chasing the thing you need to survive.
-Always carry more gas. My truck has 2 5 gallon cans on it. You can always treat water but you can't make gas.

Now my bag is pretty different than most of yours. I just have a ruck in the bed secured to one of the bed tie downs. It contains extra pair of pants/shirt x 3/socks x 6/extra pair of boots/wubbie/puss pad/sleeping bag/wet wipes/MRE's x 3/2 gallons water/water purification/med kit/9mm x 50/45 x 50/5.56 x 60/550 cord/grid map of SE United States (where I live)/compass/protactor/garmin GPS/poncho/gloves/extra knife/deet/surefire x 2 and batteries/rain gear. Ruck weighs in at almost 90 lbs. If you've never rucked over bad terrain, you should. It's mainly because my son is in scouts and we are out in North Georgia mountains alot.

My M4 is in 5.56 because that is a NATO round. It will chamber .223 but you cannot chamber 5.56 into a .223. You can find NATO 5.56 in almost any country in the world. .223 is mainly in the US.

Now you should also take into consideration you area. I'm in Georgia, natural water is abundant. Also, you need to take into consideration your normal passengers.

I'm married with kids. Which means my plans are we get home, which is shelter and has way more stock than the truck.

Now for the house we don't purchase alot of the dry foods/etc. Instead when the Sunday paper has Spaghetti O's/Chef Boy R Dee/etc. on sale, we stock up. They have a great shelf life and I know the kids will eat them hot or cold and they are vitamin fortefied. Then we just eat them. If nothing ever happens, we will always have 2 months worth of food. Same with juice boxes.

I just had a well put in the house so we have our own water supply, water can always be contaminated, especially if you are on city water. Bio terrorism is a real threat. And you're not paying the city any more for water and now they can't tell me when I can and can't wash my truck during a drought. Just make sure you go deep into the water table. Use a solar pump and you're set.

We also have a solar powered hot water heater and once Dow releases their new solar shingles, we'll have those as well and be totally self sufficient and even get a buy back program with the local electric company. We also have a stand by generator rated for 16000 watts that runs on propane. Price on the water heater panel and new water heater 80 GAL tank was $4300 but after fed/state and elect. company rebates it came to a little over $900 installed.

I always tell people to build up their home first. Steel reinforced doorways with bolts that go into the concrete foundation are almost unbreachable.

Laminate on windows keeps them from shattering and does nothing to ruin the asthetics.

Reloading bench with enough primers/gunpowder to reload what you see fit. That way anytime you shoot, you recover your brass and reload.

I was an 18C. Demo guy on a SF team. Job description is engineer meaning I built firebases/firebase security plans/demo and breaching.

Just my experiences. Cities will always have what you need. It's good to know how to survive in the wilderness (SERE level 3) but when you have a family you have to be more realistic and know the capabilities of your family and their suck factor.

    Hope that helps.

Thank you very much Dave! I admire how you have prepared for your family. I do not have kids but my wife tends to think of me as on the "looney" side of things when I talk about the "what ifs". How does your wife respond? I think the kids would soak it up and have a blast.

I'm gearing up to build my next home this coming spring....I will have a few acres and will be using a well. What are these solar shingles you speak of?
