The thread is great, the instructions where easy to follow, one clip vanished in to the black hole of space....however it did not change the status on mine. That status is blank screen, dead.

Any suggestions or direction on repair or reasonable priced replacement compass/temperature boards would greatly be appreciated.

FYI: There did not appear to be any smoking gun on the 510 resisters on my board, soldered them twice with no change. The unit died slowly, intermittent non function followed by dead...prior to its demise I got it to work by tapping on it. I also checked wire harness, appeared to be fine

I just did mine tonight... one shot and it worked. My suggestion to future fixes... do not push down the resistor/s, just put a good amount of solder on the broken connection. The circuit board expands/contracts as temperature changes, using a wire to reconnect the resistor to the board can also be helpful to compensate for this warping reaction.

Taco Suprme - don't give up.. assuming you considered the unit dead, you have nothing to lose. Keep trying with the soldering, but don't go to the trouble of reinstalling it just plug it in until you get it to work. Mine didn't work the first time either on what I thought was a good solder.
As for the clip, feel inside the hollow below the clip hanger it has to be there.
Mine was a second hand unit from EBay (to replace the sun-glasses holder) cost me $250, which is half the shop price - just keep your eye out.
    Good luck...

Did you mash that reset button several times? I thought I'd failed too until my husband hit the button a few time.

I need to buy a soldering gun, any suggestions from you guys? Im pretty sure I need to get one with a small tip from what I've been reading. I might check homedepot or OSH this weekend.

They are pretty big parts and take a while to heat up, so don't get a really small one. Any generic $10 solder wand will work though.

@ Dorbs2457: you need a 47 or 51 ohm resistor to take the place of the missing one. Radio shack should have one.

@ Taco surprme sport: send it to us before you buy a new one; there are other components that commonly fail, besides the resistors. I replace the caps, transistors, and resistors if need be.

@ Kimo: see my suggestions here for irons. Don't buy a large wattage iron! Low wattage / tip size is better suited for SMT work.

@ trd sport...see the first few posts of this thread for pics of the repair. Good luck!

What is your question? Taking it apart? What chip is the problem?

When you get everything open, the circuit board will have different chips on it. There are two that say "510".

Mine were still in place but some people have said theirs was disconnected/missing. If they are missing, I would go to radio shack or something and ask for a replacement.

Just solder the ends down. Mine did not look broken but I figured I might as well try and it worked.

I tried soldering mine and it didn't work. I am ready to follow your advice and get the 510 amps from Radio Shak(I may have some in the kit I bought to hook up the steering wheel controls to my radio) but am unclear on how to connect the amps. Do you have another pic or more info. on what to do? Thanks

I wish I could help with that answer. I honestly have no idea. Take the circuit board into radio shack and see if they can give any advice.

Hopefully someone on this massive board has an idea.

It is hard to see if the solder is broken on the 510. I got out a magnifying glass and then I could see where the solder was broken. I ran new solder on both of the 510's and then plugged it in to be sure if worked. Once everything worked I put it all back together.

DID IT !!! Hope it last awhile now. It went exactly how described in instructions at begining of this thread. I even had one metal clip come off and fished it out of the roof bracket it pops into. I was careful not to break plastic tabs on lens cover, they are snug ( take your time). Once I got to circuit board I could see right away that one end of the 510 resistor was popped up a little. I soldered a bead on the ends of both resistors and tried it before re-installing it. Fired right up!!!

Only thing is....its in the low *60's outside temp here right now. It is reading *72....I guess it takes some time to re-set???? Will go for a drive tomorrow and see.

Thanks for all the imput TW

I did this today and it works great. It didn't seem to work at first but I don't know if that was due to not soldering both resisters or because i didn't hit the power button. After I soldered the second resistor and then plugged it in it didn't look like it worked until I hit the power button on the overhead console. I am not the neatest when it comes to soldering circuits so mine were fairly large globs and it still worked out just fine. Thanks for the help with this fix everyone!

Did mine today too. I don't even know how long it was out. It worked back in the summer and didn't look at it again till 11/9/11. Don't have to have it but it annoyed me not working.

It seems that most the issues listed here are of the temp and compass not displaying at all?
My compass works, but my temp just shows 3 dashes. ---
Anyone had this issue, and know how to fix it?

I fixed my yesterday. I only put on a piece a electrical tape over the 510 to hold it down. It works. Haha.
