Cold feet at the dealership

Hey everyone, first post here... I've been following along as a lurker for months around here. Finally started talking to a dealer last weekend and went yesterday to pull the trigger on a 2011 Double Cab TRD Sport (4wd,short bed). We got to $28k for the truck (selling price). They had it washed and ready to go.

The deal sheet was out and ready to sign and something happened where I couldn't go through on things. I don't know what happened but just couldn't do it.

I've been thinking it over all night and may go back to check it out again. I think it came down to me having second thoughts about my trade-in (2007 BMW 3-series) and possibly missing the luxuries it has (quick / sporty ride, leather, heated seats, etc). At the same time I used to have a truck and would love the practicality of having one again (and especially a sweet truck like the TRD Sport). Would be nice to have something practical that I didn't have to "worry so much about". I know I would love the truck.

Don't know why I'm telling you all this other than I needed somewhere to let this all out. Anyone else ever been in my position?

For what it's worth, all those luxuries can be added to the Tacoma (leather, heated seats and you can firm up the ride to make it feel more sporty).

if you think you wil like and enjoy the tacoma and can stand to lose a luxery or two, go back up there and get it! sounds like a descent price too, even though i don't keep up with the new new trucks. good luck. . . and welcome!

 

i worked for on BMW's for a few years, i wouldn't own one unless i had $$ to fix it when it broke every week..

Its personal preference i guess, but like you say a truck is way more practical, theres only so much you can do w/ a car. Its taken me two jeeps, and a WRX to finally find out i needed a truck all along to be happy. All the room in the bed is awesome, it pulls my boat nicely without having to worry about it breaking like my jeeps, and i no longer need a trailer for my dirtbike. I say get the truck i doubt you will regret it...

 

Take a few days and think it over, never purchase with emotions. It is good that you walked away, if you were not feeling it at the time. The Tacoma will not be as luxurious as the BMW.

 

I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm on the verge of pulling the trigger, but I think I'll miss my Acura TL.

You also wont pay 127.50 an hr or whatever your dealership charges for labor...

 

Man, what's the shop rate there? My Toyota dealer is $130/hr..

 

I say trade the beemer for the truck, fall in love with the reliability of Toyota and get a Lexus ISF in a couple of years.

 

We are all a little biased because we love our trucks, so it is probably not good to ask us.
Anyway, I have had cars (including BMW) and I would rather own my truck, because I am a truck guy. If you like cars and just wanted to buy the truck because of whatever reason, maybe emotional because you saw these guys on this site getting all excited about their trucks, then maybe it is best to just step back for a few days and really think it through. I would like to say get the truck, but you will have to live with it every day, so it is ultimately your decision.

Why not keep the car and buy an older used truck for hauling crap around?

 

i love bmw personally i have owned/leased over 4 of them brand new. they are wonderful cars and do almost everything correctly.

a tacoma is not a bmw as you already know it sounds to me like you still like your bmw lol just keep it imo.

How do you get them to agree on a price, write up the sales contract, wash it for you and not sign the papers? Dick move hah.

Happened to me a few weeks ago almost traded in the truck on a car to get better mpg, but I just couldn't let my truck go.

 

No, it's not. And he shouldn't feel bad for exercising his conscience. The dealership is only out a couple hours of their time and really, a salesman's time aint worth that much.

 

I don't think so. There's a reason he is hesitating. He may not understand it now but if he's not feeling that he's doing the right thing, then he has the right not to drop 25-30k just to be considerate of the dealership. That's a lot of money to spend on a vehicle that you are hesitant about.

It's their job to do price haggling, and as for the contract, all they have to do is plug in a few numbers and the computer does all the calculating. Wash the car? Why wasn't it washed in the first place?

I don't think they went too far out of their way to do all of this.

 

Holy Wow 130 for a toyota dealership? Not to mention if my toyota was out of warranty i would never take it to the stealership, there are plenty of aftermarket shops that offer cheap service, and professional mechanics that know what they r doing....I would never pay 130 for BMW service, not to mention toyota

 

They wash it again before you take it of the lot... usually while you're signing. At least that's how it was with my two trucks.

 

He should've made that choice before having them draw the paperwork in my opinion.
