    Some companies analyze the average total cost to ship a package. This includes all the cost from customer service to calls about lost packages and then freight claims and everything in between. The shipping charge is usually never the actual cost of shipping. For most companies it isn't profitable enough to pay someone to take an order then box it up and ship it out when they are only making $0.20 profit on a $2 part. My company and many others use shipping charges to actually make a profit because sometimes the margin on the item is too low to make it worth supplying.

    I charged a guy $40 to ship a $27 bag of cat food to Alaska today. It only cost the company $15 in shipping charges.
