all pro 05+ plate bumper install question

Yeah no doubt, that came off, but someone mentioned the All-Pro website says you can keep the stock skid plate. And there's no way you can get the bumper on with the factory skid plate on there... I'll call them tomorrow (AP) and let them know to revise the instructions, sure isn't fun when your girlfriend's helping you install the bumper and you have to keep removing parts before it fits. Yes honey, just one more time, please...

Here's mine. See, way too tight!

I just noticed, when I snapped this pic a few minutes ago, that the fender flare is actually rubbing some of the finish off the top of the bumper...

 

Interesting, I believe that may be true, I do have a prerunner. I was think the years were the difference but maybe it's the model...

Yeah that's what I'm worried about, maybe the washers between the frame and bumper bottom screws will do the trick, trimming the brace bars will also give me some room, or maybe I just may get the skid plate when this is all said and done.

And for reference, I only put a single washer on the bottom of each bolt on the front of the frame, but after further reveiw, I'll be removing the passenger side washer and see if I can't "twist" the bumper up a little on that side. The lines are not straight on this bumper and it sounds like we all have different fitment issues a little here and there.

yup. mine has done the same thing. cept the powdercoat is completly gone now and has surface rust.

 

From their site, it almost looks like that's what it's "supposed" to do...

Did you do that just with a grinder?

 

i had the same idea just waiting for warm weather to get out and work on it. besides my powdercoat is bubbling in places so i think i'm just gonna paint the whole thing.

 

I wondered how I was gonna get my big 4.5" grinder to cut that curve! Since getting my dremel for Christmas, it's already been used soo many times. Here's another!

 

That's a great job there! Looks factory! Keep up the good work, I wish I and the confidence (and tools) to do that, instead of making mistakes, like stripping that bolt under the bumper cause it didn't reach/set fully. But luckily there were extra bolts from the ones I've taken off.

Longhorn, now THAT's a truck and signature! We're amongst the silver crew so it's nice to see an all black truck that looks badass! Now I'm looking at my silver running boards and chrome bumper thinking I need to get them all black! I may powdercoat the rear (less than $200 locally) and get sliders to match the look...

If you get a chance, can you take a profile picture of the gap between the bumper and the fender? The picture you had at an angle looks like the size of the gap I had before removing those skid braces (which I thought looked terrible) but it's at an angle...

Ah HA! After calling, All-Pro is open today and said that the braces are supposed to be removed when installing the bumper. Says that there is supposed to be a quarter inch gap between the top of bumper and fender/headlights. I don't see how that's possible, because clearly I already have a quarter inch gap above the bumper and about half inch gap between the bottom of the frame and bumper....

I think I'll remove the braces and put washers between the bottom bolt and creat a space, I do like the room between the top of bumper and headlights and don't want to have any rubbing issues.

Very interesting... Because those braces are required for the factory skid plate. And their website CLEARLY states that you get to keep your factory skid plate...

i've got an awesome little trick i'll let you guys in on. be patient tho. i'll go take some pics of it right now. and yes you should feel special because i said i wasnt gonna let anyone in on this.

 

i just went out and looked at mine.. its just touching the outside of the flare.. super cut-able

 

ok, so nobody likes that unsightly gap that you have to leave between the bumper and front end. i hate being able to see through to everything thats behind it so here was my solution. go to lowes and buy some garage door weather stripping and some double sided tape.



then cut strips to fit along the top edge of the bumper. apply it to the underside with the double sided tape and wala! no more gap, and the weather stripping flexes and moves as the body flexes!





the weather stripping with the angles like pictured worked really well as it angles upward to make contact with the grill, body, fender flares. it really finishes off the look and keeps it clean.
