As I was pulling out of my neighborhood tonight I heard a loud thud and then lost my a/c, power steering, the battery light came on and my truck started over heating. I brought it back home, popped the hood and saw that the serpentine belt decided to rip itself apart. Besides some coolant overflow the truck appears to be okay. The bad thing is I changed the belt out myself about 3000 miles ago and then drove it across country from Nevada to Florida, and today it decided to fail. I will be putting a new belt on tomorrow. Hopefully this one lasts. Has anyone else ever had this happen to them?

Truck didn't break, just a belt, no big deal.

Just make sure something isin't locked up like an idler pulley, tensioner, etc. Usually the reason why a belt breaks and snaps off.

    Good Luck!

Usually when a belt fails early like this, it's because an idler has a frozen bearing (at least a bad bearing).

All of the pulleys seemed to turn just fine when I tried by hand. I plan on installing a new belt and seeing how it looks from there.

NO belt has broken (yet) in my situation, but here is my scenario...

So I'm experiencing an odd sound on my taco right now. I drove it to Toyota. A service advisor only needed to hear the truck and guessed that a pulley is going bad. A service technician was walking by when he was called over. He too said that I could have a pulley with bearings starting to go bad. The sound you ask? A whiney sound is the best way to describe it. Another description... like the engine is louder as in trying to suck in more air. Another description... Like the power steering of an older car when turning.
I already checked the engine air filter and the secondary engine air filter. I checked the oil. I checked the coolant. Power steering fluid is fine as well. Assuming worse case scenario, let's say that a bearing is bad.
    1) Is the bearing the same as the pulley?
    2) I assume that if it's not the belt, that I should replace the belt while it's getting repaired. True?
    3) How about cost? Your thoughts on this repair.
In a nut shell, I'm looking for someone who has had this work done and can share some info. Thanks.

I've got an automatic v6 PreRunner.

with no belt on, you want to spin the idlers by hand, listening for an odd one compared to the others, then you want to actually feel the idler while rotating it. a bad bearing can feel like a "bumpy" rotation, even if just almost not noticeable, could still be bad. Typically the idlers will be sold as a whole assembly (spring loaded tension idler arm) or just a pulley(idler wheel) with the bearing installed.
The belt is ok if no cracks are visible when observing the inside (grooved side) while bending it.
Last time I did one the idler was about $80.00, a belt could be around $50.00 or so. If you need an idler, it's a good time to do a belt as well. Good luck

My question I guess is how would I know what part I'm touching/spinning?

Based on the description above, every pulley would be an idler with bearings inside of it. It's either the bearings going bad or the wheel itself that spins the wheel.

Its your idler pulley bearing. My 05 did the same thing. It almost sounds like a supercharger (I know, I have one) just not as loud. Its most likely why your belt shredded as it puts extra stress on the belt. Get a new belt and a new idler pulley.

Pulley's are idlers,.......... yes. I would either remove the bad idler, or the idler and belt tension arm assembly and bring that to the dealer parts department. they will know what to order from there. Or, if you can find a part # on the failed item, you can call and order it from that. A conversation with a parts guy will help establish what you need.

Did the belt break at about 90 deg or split along one of the grooves (like this picture)?

If it's split, one of the pulleys in the chain may be misaligned. Had this happen with our Caravan a few years ago - the power steering pump shifted. Did you notice any belt squeal beforehand?
