question: so, if you have to "order" it in, what obligation are you under? i.e. do you havet to sign a letter of intent, or give downpayment? this is something you can "walk away" from if you don't like the "out-the-door" price?.. sorry, newbie question, as i've never bought new before.. :D

I wouldn't order one unless I had the final price in writing.

When I got mine (used) I need a vehicle BAD. I drove up in my buddy’s Ford f250 and went to the truck I wanted. They had it for sale for just under 18k. I told them I wanted to by it for my girlfriend and I wanted this truck for 15k. They said nope cant do it. I gave them my business card and said call me when you change your mind but don’t wait to long bc I’m going to another place today and walked out. I started the big diesel up and as I was driving off a sales man can running out waving his arms and made the deal.

haha, that's the way to do it! Nice!!

Well, I didnt actually order it :D I told them what I wanted, and this dealer happened to have just the truck I wanted on order for them. So, they put my name on the acquisition as if I ordered it from the beginning. The guy I'm working with even said he'd make sure the front bumper doesnt get drilled for a license plate, and he's trying to locate a set of FJ Anthracite wheels for me to drive off the lot with :D

It has been 100% through email and very stress-free. I assume if you walk into a dealer and try to order a truck, they'll make you sign a bunch of stuff and put down a payment upfront. With the way I did it, I have the option of walking away at any time.

sweet! i plan on going the internet/email route, ...i may try through a car club-type site for no-haggle pricing, ..but i first need to do some test drives... so, not sure if i should arrange to do that first w/ the internet mgr at a few dealers?
.. i think i should probably drive a 6spd MT and a 5pd AT, ... i kinda prefer manual, ...but what i'm hearing is the AT has a taller gear for better highway crusing (important to me), ..and i've also hear people are having problems w/ the MTs?

I just "special ordered" a 2012 and had it setup exactly how I want it. In the end I didn't have to sign any paper work however I did have to give them a $500 check (that they did NOT cash) as a show of good faith so they could bring it in and we will haggle the final price when I see it. It takes forever for them to get her though!!

In NY it's mandatory. You can get ticketed if you don't have both license plates... talk about stupid. And yes you should have asked for more of a discount. I got basically the same truck with the almost exact same sticker price for $29,898 +ttl, and that was before my trade.

    Entune added

$32,659 invoice, dealer also told me the regular price would be $34,205

Price seems more or less in line with the Overstock / Edmunds / USAA site. (I will have to verify that 100% later)

    * I'm really excited too, as this one is built on 12/5/11! Gonna have me a Christmas present to myself.

Received a price guarantee from USAA but the dealer insists on a 'destination fee' of $810. I'm wondering if that's normal or is it expected.

Also, is the factory alarm what most people use? I don't see much reference to that on these boards.

USAA quote: 4x4 DCSB TRD Offroad
    (entune,towing pkg,carpets,VIP alarm)
    $32,242

From what I've read the USAA quote is usually a good negotiating starting point. I'd like to push back but every dealer is giving me the short supply sob story here in southern CA

Got the same truck without the 7year/100k for $23500 otd in 2007. Man did prices go up that much in 4 years? Seeing these close to 40k prices is making want to puke. Also in 2007 I got the inlaw the same truck + tow package, LSD, and sports wheels for $24000 otd which was $500 under invoice.

The Truecar prices INCLUDE the destination fee (which every car has, it is always calculated into the MSRP/invoice price) and all the other markups. Except taxes, DMV fees, and "dealer fees". Dealer fees are just after-the-fact price markups the dealers dont advertize but make you pay when you're signing the papers. You should ALWAYS get the out-the-door price that will include all of those extra fees. If a dealer refuses to give you an OTD price, walk away.

Truecar is what the USAA/Costco/Overstock.com services use to guarentee prices. If your dealer tries to add $810 to the USAA price he is making you pay the destination fee twice. You should not go back to that dealer because it sounds like they are being very dishonest and misleading you! You should also report the dealer to USAA - I'm sure they'd like to hear about a partner dealer abusing the system.

I just got my 2012 3 days ago.
    Sports TRD Package 4x2
Super White, Double Cab, Short Bed
I didn't want the navi system or the JBL system, so that was excluded.
Price was 29K OTD at 2.79 APR 5 years. I believe the MSRP was 29,800 before all other fees. Hope that info helps you.

Spoke with a USAA rep and they only 'price guarantee' for current inventory. I've chosen a blue 4x4 which is rare around here and there seems to be only silver / gray available.

They said they have no control over what additional costs a dealer will charge to ship a specific color or model truck to my dealership because there's just too many cost variables.

Oh well, guess I need to like it or leave it.

Yak do what I did. Collect all the email addresses of all of your local toyota dealerships internet sales managers and fleet managers - there are about 6-7 in a 50 mile radius of me, and about 20 if I go all the way up to seattle... Anyway when you have them all, write a single email and address it to every one of them. That way they can see they are in direct competition with other dealers.

In the email, state that you want a no-BS transaction, and value honesty. Tell them what kind of truck you want, and that you want OTD price quotes. That is the price of the truck PLUS any other fees. The TOTAL price you will have to pay out the door.

I did this and got responses from a bunch of dealers who wanted to win my business. They knew that I knew my shit and wouldnt take any BS salesmen crap. They quoted me the invoice price, their price, and any fees I would have to pay, and then the OTD price. I was VERY picky, but ended up with something almost exactly like I wanted, for an OTD price (including all fees and taxes) of $472 above invoice.

Sometimes if a dealer wants to win your business they will acquire stock from another dealer and have it shipped to them, at a cost, to sell to you. They will usually charge you an extra fee for this (but they wont tell you exactly what it is up front). This fee is completely different from the Destination Charge, which is a set fee Toyota charges to both dealer and customer. It's why stock that is on a dealer's lot is almost always going to be cheaper than having them "find" one for you. The USAA rep was talking about this dealer-dealer transfer fee, not the destination charge.

I stand by what I said before - if he is adding the $810 destination charge to the USAA price he is charging you twice for the same thing. The USAA price has the destination charge already included into it! Imagine if you were selling a car - if you had no morals and wanted to get an extra $800 out of somebody, would you tell them "Wow this USAA price is great for you! I'm going to raise it by $800." or would you lie and say the destination charge is extra? It's simply a dirty tactic by a scumbag salesman.

Question: How badly do you need the truck? Is waiting another month or two worth the extra few hundred or possibly thousand dollars in your pocket? Remember, there will always be more stock arriving, which means more opportunities for you to get a better deal... all you have to do is be patient.
