Hey it's bob from Maxtrac... I know you guy's have alot of questions regarding the spindles so please let me answer them for you... There is alot of guessing and speculation here and I just want to give you a straight answer....

I have been in the off road industry for 35 years now. From mechanic to parts to store manager to manufacturer...

We do not or will we ever build JUNK... there's pleanty of companies that will do that but usually they don't last long. This was a QC problem and every company out there runs into these problem from time to time. No one and no company is perfect and these do happen. I wish they would never happen but guess what we aern't perfect.

Jerry, the owner of Canberg is a friend of mine and he does make a great product.... You will never see me bash his product and if you want his spindles you will get a great product but our's will be just as good.

So now let me have it and I will try to get back to you guy's as fast as I can...

    Gents,
Got a response from MaxTrac's GM concerning the above noted problems. As stated before, seems like a solid guy. They get this stuff squared away, and I'm sold.

    "To whom it may concern,

My name is Michael and I recently spoke with the GM of MaxTrac on the phone concerning the particulars of your new 4" 05-11 Toyota Tacoma Lift Spindle. I had explained that a website I am a member of is in the process of setting up a group buy and I wanted a little information on the spindle. All my questions were answered and I was completely pleased with the conversation. Unfortunately, the very first member of our forum to purchase the spindle had some problems with the install. One problem was the spindle was rubbing on what I presume was an aftermarket brake rotor which is his problem in my opinion, not yours. One other problem that concerned me was a gap, or better put, a fitment problem, between the spindle and the LCA. Rather than attempt to explain, I've included a link to the forum thread describing the problem. My question is, I still plan on purchasing a set of your spindles, I'm just hoping you can explain to me what the problem is, if there is one. Is this a manufacture problem that I too am going to deal with or some sort of mistake on his part? Considering he brought his entire wheel hub to the shop where he purchased the spindle from, and their fix was a "washer" to fill the gap, is this too what I can expect? Any and all help is greatly appreciated and I appreciate your time."

    And the response I got...

    "Hey Michael
First of all sorry for the delay on getting back to you but I did want to find all of the information out on this issue. With that said here are the explainations for these issues...

    1. Aftermarket brake rotors rubbing on the spindle.

We designed these knuckles to work with the factory rotors. I wish we could forsee all of the issues with all of the other aftermarket parts that will bolt onto our spindles like rotors. There are several manufacturers that make racing style rotors for that truck and it's almost impossible to test all of the rotors to check for clearance. I will tell you that after we found this out we are going to make changes to the knuckle design that will fit the majority of after market rotors.

    2. The gap between the ball joint plate and the knuckle.

This one is hard to explain but i'm going to give it a try. The stock knuckle is a single shear design. That means the the ball joint plate is held on with a bolt that runs through the plate and bolts to the knuckle. Ours (and Camburgs) is a double shear design knuckle. That means the bolt runs through the knuckle then through the plate and then back through the knuckle. This sandwiches the ball joint plate between the knuckle instead of just bolting the ball joint plate onto the knuckle. This double shear design is roughly 800 times stronger than the factory design. Where we have the gap is in between the Aupper and lower mounting points that sandwich the ball joint plate. Since this is not a technical part of the factory knuckle ( A single shear design does not have the lower mounting point) there can be some variances on the thickness of that ball joint plate and we can't make that gap absolutely perfect because it's impossible to have a "0" gap. It has to have roughly .005" to .010" gap and once you torque down the parts it will close that gap. Now the gap that Richard on your forum has was too much so to get him fixed so he could drive his truck was to build a shim to bridge the gap allowing Richard to finish the install and get him on the road. Jay, our General Manager brought over some plate steel that was .047" thick which was .010" thinner than a perfect fit to allow for the part to fit correctly and once the ball joint plate was torqued down the gap would be gone. The reason I wanted to tell you that we used .047" plate steel is to show you that we didn't just find any old "washer" and throw it on his truck. Even though this did work it is unacceptable for our standards and the only reason we did this is to get him on the road because he couldn't put his truck back to stock. Now is there any issue on using the shim??? Absolutely not!!! Is this a safety issue??? Absolutely not!!! This shim does not take anything away from the strength or weight carrying capabilities of the truck and since the factory does not even have that on their knuckle, it wouldn't have been there from the factory.

Last issue I have is a cast knuckle over a welded one. Most race applications out there do use a fabricated knuckle and they also have over 30 inches of travel with multiple bypass shocks for off road racing. Most fabricated knuckles are built in small quantities there for the cost of these parts are more. Cast knuckles are used in a wide variety of applications from small import cars all the way to big rig trucks that weigh upwards of several tons with no issues. The initial cost of casting a knuckle is far greater than a fabricated part but in the long run We can build more knuckles at a better price than expensive fabricated knuckles.

Now for the hard part but the right part...We will be taking these knuckles off of the market until we can fix these issues.
Here at Maxtrac Suspension we strive to make the best part available and quality is our #1 responsibility... Period!!!

If you have any more questions please feel free to e-mail or call me. I'll be glad to answer them all...

Just to be clear, I know for a fact that not all Camburg spindles are double sheared.

Double sheared is much stronger than single... The ball joint plate is sandwiched between two mounting points where the stock is just bolted on from the bottom. I went on the Camburg site and looked at thiers and it was double. Maybe you got an early version. Just sayin

Yes, it is stronger. I believe the early Camburgs were double, just like the allied ones they were designed after. I think the site shows double because its an early picture. I highly doubt i got an early version as they were purchased 4 months ago. just so you know

    * If you are pulling the knuckles of the market, does that mean you will be pulling the spindles off the market?

    * When do you think you will have spindles for the Tacoma's that have the new knuckle design and clearance for aftermarket rotors?

    Thanks!

Hey bud... the new piece for our inspection should be here next month... They have to build several samples so we can x-ray them and then we cut them apart to inspect. I'm hoping for the end of January to be honest...
