towing with a lift?

Are there different capacities that need to be taken into consideration or anything that changes the trucks stock ability to perform?

Mainly interested in the 3" and 6" lifts and differences between the two.

If the max tow capacity is 6500 does that include the bed of the truck being loaded?

 

Not sure what exactly your asking. However I get a far better ride while towing now with a 3" lift than stock but there are some minor changes in handling do to the Hieght. Plus with the icon leaf pack it seems that the back end sways a bit more over the bumps do to the trailer bouncing. Also 6500 lbs capacity is including the weight of the gear in the truck box to the best of my knowledge.

I personally opted for air ride in the back for towing because my TT is right at the max for tongue weight and it sagged out the rear leafs a fair bit which did change the dynamics and increased the handling in the front end a fair bit.

 

The 6500 Lbs is the limit on the gear/trailer being pulled. There is a cargo capacity for the truck itself (900-1200lbs or so depending on model). That capacity includes the tongue weight, passengers, gear in the bed.

You might need a drop hitch if you go with a big lift. Other than that-It'll feel different because the springs/dampners are changed, but it should tow just fine...

 

If anything, suspension lifts will help you towing. I have a 3" lift and the rear AAL has helped with towing my TT

I had to flip the axle on my TT so that I wouldn't need such a huge drop hitch

 

The GCWR of my Tacoma is 11,000 lbs with the tow package if I remember correctly, with a curb weight of around 4,200 lbs after, plus any options. So if you tow 6,500 lbs, you'll have 11,100 - 4,200 - 6,500 - weight of any options = 400 lbs - weight of any options left.
It's probably safe to say that you won't have more than 300 lbs left in that case, and that includes the weight of driver, other people, any gear. There won't be much left for stuff in the bed.

Thanks for the replies I thought that it was 6500 lbs. total now thanks to you guys I wont be overweight. I plan to add a lift but wasnt sure how the lift would effect the towing, so thanks again now I just need to decide on a height, not sure wether I want a 3" or 6".

 

If you tow frequently, I'd give more consideration to the 3" lift. A lot of the 6" lifts use blocks for the rear where a good 3" lift has a heavier replacement leaf pack.

 

i tow a 6 x 12 utility trailer with landscaping equipment with my truck. i have a 6" fabtech lift on my tacoma. it tows just fine. I'm in the market for a 7 x 14 enclosed trailer to use on longer trips with a lot of ATV gears and ATVs
