bed tent pros and cons??

Looking into buying a bed tent for my lil 5lugger (6ft) bed. What are the pros and cons of buying a tent for the bed of a tacomas compaired to just a normal ground tent?

Bears hate truck beds, thats a big plus.

Honestly the onlyadvantage I see is you wont be sleeping on the ground.

Arent the bed tents really pricey? I think I've seen some prices a while back. Honestly, if there is a super good reason you have to sleep off the ground then go for it, but if not, instead of spending all that money, save some and just get a real nice ground tent.

 

I wondered about the same thing, but the price put me off. I ended up ordering the #1 tent on Amazon for $45 (3 person tent too) plus a top rated 0F sleeping bag and a $50 air pad and still paid less than I would for the bed tent.
Just not worth it in my opinion.

 

I've been debating this same thing for a while now.

They had a sweet SwissGear tent on woot.com last week for $60...I really wish I had seen it before it was over.

I have to say they look pretty cool, but my 5' bed size also doesn't mesh well with my 6'1 body so that's also something you have to take into consideration.

 

Aside from being off the ground and getting alot of looks, there isnt much of a advantage.. To go anywhere you need to take it down, my gf hated climbing into it, overall I dont think its worth it. I bought mine for a great deal and have used it a few times, but its much easier to pop a tent up on the ground.

Well, you'd use it with the tailgate down, so that would give you about 6' 10" of total room. I still don't really see the big advantage, unless you're camping in a really wet and/or rocky spot.

No experience with them myself, but me and a friend thought it would be a good idea to sleep in his enclosed trailer he used to haul his 4 wheelers. We often camped out in the cold weather to ride for the weekends and spent many cold nights in tents so this sounded like the obvious solution when he bought the trailer. Wrong! Even with a heater inside we froze our asses off. The floor was the problem, with the air underneath we stayed cold as shit! I stayed warmer with my tent and my 20 degree rated sleeping bag. So that is what comes to mind when I see these truck tents. I guess if you're not camping in freezing weather then they would be okay. Just my 2 cents.

 

Some advantages of the truck tent for me: in the desert I dont want to camp with any critters/spiders/snakes sneakin' in -- in the night, Beach camping = hard to find a flat spot!

A think a camper top with a platform and an air mattress makes much more sense, you still get to use the bed for storage! I guess that's where having a short bed on my truck would kinda suck...

 

I bought one from walmart that was like $29 and It fits in the bed nicely
