    Dangers

    People climbing on the structure are the primary reason why quinzhees collapse. A collapsing quinzhee can be very dangerous if someone gets caught inside. Just as in an avalanche, the weight of the snow often makes it impossible to dig oneself free. Suffocation may occur if the occupants are not rescued quickly enough. In addition to this, many quinzhees collapse during their construction for a variety of reasons, including poor snow conditions, warm weather, construction problems (hitting a supporting wall) or failure to let the snow set long enough. To protect oneself against collapse during construction, one should only dig a quinzhee while on one's knees, never one's back. In the event of collapse, someone stands a much better chance at digging themselves out if they are on their knees.
    It is generally advised that a quinzhee should only be constructed alone if in a survival situation.

    When building a proper quinzee you break twigs into 3" long peice and stick em in. Then you hollow it out so your outside walls are about 2"-3" thick. Those dangers more apply to mounds made by plows.

    If I go snow camping, it will be for one night to take a lot of pictures and say that I did it. I don't like sleeping in the cold. I definitely wouldn't dig a hole in a mound of snow if I had a perfectly good tent and sleeping pad with me. :D

    Surprisingly the Quinzee's are way warmer than any tent. In -40 degree weather the inside of mine measured 36+ when i woke up! Well within the range of your average sleeping bag. Iv made/slept in them 5 times and done numerous tents let me tell you if it didn't take several hours to build a good one i would never use a tent in the winter.

    I sleep in a -10* bag in the summer and I'm cozy. I have no idea what I would need to be comfortable in the winter!

    That was the #1 reason I went out and got my 0 degree bag and better pad. No more of that crap!

    I ALMOST got in to that.... theres a good reason I said almost... that crap is EXPENSIVE!!! plus I am adhdX10 to the 20th power... i have a hard enough time just plain sitting still.... much less try to fish. :p

    I can't do the sitting still and fishing thing...I constantly move and chase fish. Fly fishing, especially saltwater, is a whole new ballgame...I'm pretty addicted to it. Got my first red on fly a few months ago...nothing like it!
