"thud" sound front left of truck

Hey guys I've searched and found people with a similar problem but not exact to mine. I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm hearing a metallic thud sound when reversing and occssionally turning into a parking spot from the front left of my vehicle. It's a 2005 4wd double cab. I have nonidea how to diagnose this or fix the problem. I only have concerns because it doesn't sound normal. Any help or recommendations is appreciated. Thx

 

When you turn to full lock, it could be your power steering pump just whining from the excess pressure of being on full lock.

 

yeah i know what that sounds like but this sound is like a loud thud sound and it only happens once. not like a whining sound. =/

 

Have you checked the shocks? Could be a worn shock or even one that snapped. I don't remember who it was but someone posted a pic if their front shock that snapped.

 

Could be a ball joint (upper or lower).

Jack up the drivers side front tire about 2". Put a pry bar between your tire and the road. Place a hand on the lower BJ and pry the tire. If the BJ has play or a thud it needs to be replaced. Repeat for the upper and other side.

Could be a wheel bearing but I doubt it. Jack the driver side front up 2" and check for lateral play. If play exists and your ball joints are good chances are the bearing is shot.

I'm assuming in my recommendations you already checked to make sure every bolt was tight and that your bushing are in good working order.

Also check your inner/outer tie rods for play.

thanks for the pointers. im gonna check what you said. i havent checked the bushing and all because i'm a complete noob when it comes to the working parts on my truck. i really wish i knew more than i did lol. but thanks for your input

 

We all gotta start somewhere. Research and planning before getting into it is the key to saving money and time while learning.
With a little of each I replaced my LCA bushings/cams, outer tie rods, LCA ball joints, and wheel bearings chasing down many front end "thuds"

 

i want to learn as much about my truck as i can i just dont know where to start. any suggestions? this thud is getting really annoying lol. haha and its not at full turn that the sound happens its at about half turn while reversing out and only on occasion when slowly pulling into a parking spot. wish there was a book i could read to help me out with all the mechanical "stuff" i dont know about lol

 

Are you sure it's not your brakes shifting? These trucks have floating pads.

This site is hard to search due to hundreds of threads on the same topics so I would suggest searching TTORA for any tech info you need. Also don't trust just anyone from a forum. A ton of people have no clue what they are talking about and that bad info can get you in a lot of trouble. Just because someone has 20k in posts does not make him/her smarter or more experienced then someone with 500 posts either.

You can grab a Haynes manual at Pep-Boys or a similar auto parts place and keep it in the truck at all times. It is a great resource to have and well worth the $20. This will allow you to have a book in your hands with pictures when you do the checking.

I would pull off a tire and inspect everything from torsion bar links to the wheel bearings. Don't jump ahead of yourself and do both sides at one time. It's quicker to keep the tools in hand and jump from side to side, but for someone learning I wouldn't advise it so nothing gets overlooked.
