Gear Ratio / Axle questions?

Hi, I have a 2003 Black Toyota Tacoma x-cab and I am thinking about doing "a few" upgrades. I am planning on when I get the money installing a Fabtech 6" lift with 35" BFGoodrich All Terrain tires and a STS bolt on turbo. So I want to know what type of axle &/or gear upgrades if any would be a good choice with this setup? Sorry if I come off as a noob I know mustangs not Tacos.

 

So this truck will be a street queen I assume. Just need to regear your rear diff to 4.88 most likely.

 

yea sounds like a street queen.

well the lift and turbo have nothing to do with gears. Its the size of tire you want to run. as said before, 4.88s will do you good for 33-35'' tires.

 

Its actually not going to be a street queen. I usually atv but my Father sold my Polaris Sportsman 500 so I am actually looking to go wheelin in this truck. I already have down a several Colorado Passes in it stock including Skull Field Pass, Taylor Pass, and Perl Pass. The reason I want the lift is on those passes I had alot of clearance issues. The turbo is because I heard once you jump to larger tires it make the 3.4L gut less and I still want it to be able to drive it to work with out putts in along like a grandma.

So I have been looking for a 4.88 diff kit and found a 4.88 Detroit True track is this a good kit or is there something you guys would recommend. I wont be doing the work myself a defferential and a automatic transmission are like no mans land for me but everything else I plan on doing my self. Would it be better if I went in to the local Differential shop or even the local 4wheelparts and let them tell me what to put in an have them do it? I would really perfer to know what I want before I go in so I am not walking in blind.

 

Well not a lot of ppl like that 6'' lift for wheeling. Some ppl are really against drop bracket lifts. I don't really have an opinion on DB lifts. Its not a very popular lift on here tho. Most ppl just love 3'' of lift and 33'' tires. Makes the truck very capable.

As for the turbo, i personally love turbos over superchargers. however...a rear mount turbo is NOT ideal for wheeling.

You'd be better off makeing a custom manifold in the engine bay. Hell there is even a full kit for sale on here right now in the FS section.

And the whole point of regearing is so that the 3.4l is as boggy with the taller tires. So really with 4.88s you won't notice hardly any differenace in power. Not that a turbo or SC wouldn't help. But thats why we regear in the first place.

So because you want a DB lift and a rear mount turbo thats why we all assumed mall crawler lol

I would do some more reasearch on here man. LOTs of great info on stuff. Espeacially if you are going to turn your truck into a weekend warrior tail rig. Check out the builds section for ideas and stuff man. You can save yourself a lot of cash possibly..

O great another addiction as if computer parts weren't bad enough I spent that alone on one computer.

and OP and properly setup 3 inch lift will do better on trails than a 6 inch lift, the 3 inch actually gives you better clearance than a drop bracket lift.

i would go with 4.88s for 35s, 4.56s for 33s if you DD it still.

i have 33s with 4.88s and i LOVE it. i do dd it sometimes because i love driving my truck and hate driving my car haha

 

been there too. But i didn't spend that much. Still have a nice gaming rig tho.
