how long have you owned your taco? coulda sworn i saw you near del taco in havasu when i was there end of march

 

"Towing" my 2012 Sportsman 400 H.O. totals out to about 700 lbs. the rear has the TSB springs too . Has a 2 1/2" leveling kit. im thinking that a block in the rear would help the sagging, yet when i load it on a trailer the truck sits perfectly level.

OK I was desperate, my brother who promised his full size truck didn't come through. I didn't go fast, 35 max, or far but the little 4cyl auto Taco did just fine.

Boat, gear, fuel, water and trailer add up to about 8,000 lbs. The Taco had no trouble pulling that on flat ground or short uphills. The only real problem was backing into my driveway, it's a bit of an uphill and gets real steep at the driveway apron. She was real soft in suspension and steering at 35 mph, enough to convince me that highways speeds would be a really bad idea. I don't want to even think about how much the wind at 55 on that huge hull would push around that light truck.

The lack of a tow/haul mode was really felt. With the light accelerator foot I was using it would shift way too early, well under 2,000 rpms, then strain. So it was best to turn it into a manual by putting the shifter into 1 low and then letting her wind up to 2,500 or so then shifting to 2 then 3. Doing that she never really felt like she was straining and didn't hunt up and down.

 

Wow!! Is this for real? I'm surprised the front wheels were on the ground..

 

x2 dang dude! thats one heck of a boat for the truck! now i know if i had to. my truck would do it something like that. but we also have the 4.7 V8 tundra.

 

Yeah its for real I really did tow it. Earlier in the week I had 1/2 yard of blue stone in the bed which is over a thousand lbs and the nose sat higher than with the boat on the hitch. Speed is the real issue though, just think of how the forces on the hitch, frame, suspension and power train multiply as you speed up. I imagine a hitch rated for 6,500 lbs and 650 lbs tongue weight really has to support a few multiples of that to take the forces of that weight jumping around at 65 mph. Going easy under 35 mph with 8,000 lbs probably didn't even come close to those stresses or even the stresses 3,500/350 the four banger is rated for would be at 65.

 

Thanks for the Firestone Air Bag info. I just installed mine. I just picked up a 24' Komfort Trailblazer, 4900 dry, Dual Cam weight distribution, swat control digital controller. I have a bit of lift and 33's and the towing package. It pulls harder than the little triton powered F-250 I towed it home with. Curious how it'll tow on B.C. roads. It's snow season here now, have to wait until April to try it out!

 

I had a freind with a similar boat and situation. He had a 5spd 4 banger 96ish ranger. He decided it was a bad idea and turned around to go home. When he was trying to back it into his driveway he couldn't get it over the hump for drainage. So needless to say about a half an hour later I drove by and saw he had a medium traffic road blocked and people gathered around o watch the show.

A little too perfectly. It was a new trailer and that was the first time the boat was on it. The only adjustment I made at the ramp was moving the winch so the whole boat was on the rollers. Turns out the tongue weight was way too low around 200 lbs which would be only 2.5 percent. Just yesterday I moved the axles back to get it up to 400 lbs for the minimum of 5 percent tongue weight.

 

this is moving in to my new apartment.... heavy car trailer with furniture cab of truck is loaded up and all my military gear is in the bed.... I have hauled a audi A4 on car trailer from Los Angeles to AZ helping a friend out before deployment. Truck pulled it just fine was doing about 70 on the I-10 gas mileage wasnt too too bad 4.0 V6. sadly dont have a pic of that

 

hey how did it do when you took boat out of water? or did you just move it from point A to B?
