Oh thats easy. That one way breather lets air out but will not let air inside the housing. Oil seals are .... oil seals. Which means they are designed to keep oil inside the housing and not be a some kind of super seal. Remember those seals are just pieces of rubber riding on surface of axle. There is no way to make 100% seal on something like that. So when there is enough vacuum those axle seals will let air from outside and if you happen to be in the water they will let water in too.
Its amazing how much vacuum gets created in that thing when seals and breather is new.

Meh...I was only tolling for replies lol.

But let me ask you this...would you trust that little thingamigbobber to not let water while traversing through a water crossing?

That one way valve seals so well it won't let air IN nevermind water.
Now if it is dirty and that rubber washer can not seal properly or spring is broken then yeah its possible to get water through. If its new and working correctly no way in hell to get water through it. Axle seals will let go before that breather does.

You shouldn't trust it! That is why we do the mod... Not because water gets in there, but because it doesn't break the vacuum, it CAUSES water to suck in AT THE AXLE SEALS.

Put the true (2 way) breather up high... lets expanding gear oil pressure out, and clean air back in during a dip in water while hot situation.
