265/65/17 or 265/70/17

Any preferances on which size to go with? I've decided on the Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10 tires. 08 Double cab SB with stock suspension.

265/70, but I did lose 1-2 MPG.

 

265/70 and I actually get slightly better mileage on the highway, no change around town.

 

Nothing. Just daily driving. Lots of snow where I live if that's relevant.

 

Yes , 255/75/17 is an option , and better for snow in general , but less common .

What's the benefit of going to 265/70 tires?

 

Ive got the hankooks in 265/70/17. They rub the plastic liner since my wheels have such a high offset. They were fine on stock wheels.

 

One benefit is that it is a slightly larger diameter and will reduce the rpm's you turn when on the highway. They also fill the wheel opening nicely

Will probably technically true, my guess is that any benefit this would give would be negated by the extra effort the engine needs to move the extra weight of the tire.

EDIT: They do look MUCH better though.

 

They are actually cheaper than the stock 265/65/17 size, go figure!

 

255s are actually lighter weight

Depends on how you drive. I actually do a little better unloaded on the highway with the taller tires.

 

and your spedo will be spot on with the 265/70 series tires. Not sure with the 255s. If it were me I would get whatever is cheaper.

I cant wait till my stock tires are worn out so i can go with a larger tire! its gunna be geolanders for me.

 

Between 265/65, 265/70 and 255/70 they are all a bit of a toss up in terms of MPG what matters more is brand and tread design.

A highway tread tire is going to get better mpg of course vs a all terrain or a mud terrain obviously.

I want a AT tire but dont want to drop a bunch in MPG so this is done by buying a P metric tire which has less tread depth typically by 2/32's and a thinner sidewall vs a Light truck / LT tire. Of course if you tow or off road alot a LT tire is the correct choice.

The other variance is weight look at the weight of each tire. The stock tire depending what yours came with can be as low as 36-37 pounds a tire.

Some AT tires are 50 pounds and some are 38 pounds for same size just different brand and tread design. Just make sure you look the weight is the main thing that will kill the mpg since it is rotating mass and not dead weight.

I personally am going with the new BFG rugged terrains in 265/70/17 since they weigh in at 39 pounds and look good. I do not want a loud AT tire either. This one is techinically a HT tread design.

I had the original bridgestone revos in p metric and they were 40 pounds but the truck road like crap for some reason. Very stiff. I would go with them again but do not want such a stiff ride again.
