    bummer. trust me, I am well aware of the feeling.

    try 12 hours on a train....the vibration, the rocking motion, the heater on...the rumble of the 4,000hp prime-movers....fighting the desire to pass out. :D

    dude, I got nothing to do with running the damn thing...I jsut make the call wether or not to plug it sometimes...

    most locos now have an alerter that goes off and if you dont make any adjustments to the controls it plugs itself...no locos use deadman pedals anymore, that I know of.

    Our autopilot has a deadman circuit that is the same principal as the old foot pedal, except controlled by circuitry...

    I dotn really care about cows...Ive hit one or two...but autos on or near the tracks yes.

    Some of my responsibilites;

    limits of authority/signals, depending on what type of method of operation i.e. CTC (centralized traffic control), ABS (auto blokc signaling), TWC (track warrant control) or DTC (direct traffic contol).

    I also am repsonsible for the train, i.e. everyhting including adn behind the engines. I have to figure TPOB (tons per operable brake), HPT (horsepower per ton), and DBPT (dynamic brake per ton).

    I have switch postion forms to be filled out...

    I have to keep my engineer in check too..make sure he isnt speeding, etc.

    more stuff, but this would take all day to explain.

    depending on how much of one you actually catch...if you are going slow, they just fall under and get crushed. you dont see much of anything that way...but at about 45 mph they leave some skid marks on the pilot..or in the step-wells.

    EDIT- any faster that about 45mph and they just get flung like a dog toy...try hitting one at 70mph or higher...its quite comical.

    I would hate to have to scrape that off the engine.
