Today, i noticed a white/gray film under the oil fill cap (08 V6 @ 10,500 mi). Photo attached; if you look in the background, you can see a little of the fill neck. When looking thru the fill neck, the engine is clean and appears normal - no white/gray film. The oil dip stick is also normal. I called the dealer and was told that it is most likely because of condensation due to the recent weather (40° and rainy a day ago and 23° today). I use Castrol 5W-30 conventional oil and a toyota filter every 3000 miles.

What do you guys think? Has anyone else seen this? Do I have anything to worry about? I cleaned the cap and will keep an eye on it as I'm about 500 miles away from an oil change.

    Thanks for your input.

I found it on mine too, I chalked it up a little condensation mixed in with oil that found its way onto the cap

Same here white oil (oil/water) under cap.

    Never been there before.

Runs worse then ever. SO i think....

The lifters are making more noise now too. This concerns me, because if there is something wrong with the oil, which there must be, then the lifters would be one of the first to show issues......???????????????

After I changed the oil the lifters sounded much better?????? damn

    Any more ideas?

No lifters in DOHC engines. The noise is the valve buckets. They are adjusted via shims (shim under bucket). They will always have a ticking sound, but oil will definatly play a role to how loud they get. Try switching to a good synthetic oil, and see if that helps.

I am using Mobil 1 now. They got quieter when i changed the oil. But are getting louder and I am seeing more of the white stuff.

I never had the white stuff before...........I checked the coolant, nothing, and it appears to be same level as before

    I tow a 4000# travel trailer 10k year.

Toy said the same thing about the noise.....I wasn't sure. It is not quiet a deisal sounding motor but getting there!! lol

    Good point. :)
Upon further investigation into this, it seems there are a couple of reasons why this is happening to peoples trucks.
As the oil fill tube is plastic and long (unlike the ones that dump the oil right into the head with no fill tube), the water in the air is going to condens in it first. And combined with short trips that dont give the engine oil time to "burn off" the water, it can creat this stuff on the bottom of the filler cap. Seems there HAVE been some problems associated with this, but I have only found them to be on Dodge 4.7 engines. Every other vehicle manufacture has this issue, and only in states that have regular humidity, Like Oxymar00n mentioned. It seems to be no issue if regular oil changes are performed. Audi and BMW owners are finding the same issues with their vehiclesw, and their solution is to shorten their oil change intervals (they were doing 25,000 Km intervals, but I cant find what they are going to). If you have a 5000 mile oil change, shorten it up by 1000 miles. For those that change at 3000 miles, try shortening it 500 miles or so until you no longer see the problem in the oil cap. OR, try to take longer drives. :)

I just went & checked my overflow, its been sitting all night & there is only a very small amount in the bottom. Toyota has just serviced it a couple months ago & temp on my scangauge reads 184-186 warmed up good.

I still have residue on the cap too but feel its how the chris, SS, & krootz described it. I run syn, toy filter, 28k on the 2006 odo & live in VT. Not sure if this helps or not.

Mine was very thick oil/water mix in my cap and down in the riser.......... I noticed my cap did not completely seat on the riser. I tried to put in on with out cross threading it, after about 5 tries it finally seated properly.................Can't completely tell if this fixed it since I am out of town now and can't check it in real world use. But around the house for week it was completely corrected.............So go find out if it is a toy manufacturing issue and let me know.....
