Why wouldn't he treat that? instead of just taking pictures as he lost his thumb?

 

I wondered the same thing. Those pics are all over the web.

I'm guessing there may have been some extenuating circumstances that prevented him from being able to treat it.

I still have yet to see anything that proved it was legit, but it definitely looks gnarly.

Are you sure that wasn't treated? What was the string tied around it/his hand?

 

I only saw it in one picture and didn't really pay attention to it.

I just know that when my buddy was bitten by a Brown Recluse, they were able to cut out the venom and he never had this issue. He went to the hospital about 12 hours after it happened.

When they cut it out, they basically just used a curved razor blade and made a "bowl" shaped cut into the bite. It was about 1/8" deep and only about the size of a pencil eraser.

It's still there - he makes up all kinds of stories about it.

No that is not treated, At the beginning stages it can be treated with MUCH less damage than that guy had.

Either way, I figured I'd give some background on it.

That's what I was thinking. I'm wondering if the dude just waited several weeks to get it treated, and by the time they got to it, the most they could do was prevent the spreading.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was at risk for acute renal failure, paralysis, etc... - during the time when the last few pictures were taken.

Maybe he didn't know it was a spider bite and thought it was just a prick from a splinter and just let it go.

 

Some people are more allergic to the venom than others. And it depends on whether they hit you with a dry bite or a wet bite.

Venomous species (bugs, snakes, lizards, fish etc) do not always release venom during bite. If they did they would put themselves at a significant risk of not having enough venom when it really matters.

For example most poisonous snakes (not all) have hollow openings in their fangs through which venom is released. You could be bit by a snake and have what is called dry bite. When snake bites you but no venom is released. Opposite involves venom being injection which is called injection bite or wet bite.

Some snake species do not have hollow teeth or have poisonous teeth on back of their jaws which implies that if snake cant get its mouth open wide enough during bite it wont inject venom because it can't chew. Some snakes got around this problem by having fangs for biting and then venom oosing from glands and or simply spitting it (spitting cobra produces venom that it shots as far as 6-10ft and is very accurate with it).

In many cases one can survive the bite but die from anti-venom through anaphylactic shock. That is why emergency rooms do not always administer it.

 

Didn't think your allergic reaction would accelerate or decelerate the necrosis from the bite? Most Brown recluse bites don't even result in necrosis
