Had a first Gen, 98' access cab 4x4, Toyota bought it back from me. Used the cash to buy a 2010 access cab 4x4 SR5, drove it for a year and a half. I had to go back, so I have now bought a 2002 TRD stepside, trying to sell the 2010....pretty much sums it up for me.

I loved my '88 regular cab 4x4. I looked for a late 90s standard cab v6 4x4 Tacoma for a while but was never really in love. There's just something about trucks with round wheel wells that looks really weird to me.

Easy. '04. They are the most refined versions before hitting the bigger body style. And before Toyota started trying to overtake GM as the largest manufacturer (IMO, quality suffered a bit as a result).

Also, no one makes a "compact" truck any more. The new Tacos are almost as big as the older Tundras. Yes, they have more room inside, but I've never felt cramped in my '04, either. The rear seats of the 2nd gens still don't have a lot of room in the back of the DC's.

I'll agree here. I had an '86 turbo 4Runner. LOVED that truck. still do, actually, but sadly, it's being defiled by some stranger (probably turned it into a chevota by now, ack!).

    stealth much?? :D

i had a 1st gen and i loved it! it was tough as hell and would go anywhere i wanted it to. but i love the looks of my 2nd gen a lot better and so far its been a very reliable truck as well.

I love my 1st gen so much that when it came time to replace it. I got another one! Currently she is in the shop getting the frame recall done. I was given a 2011 tacoma single cab 4x4 as a rental. Its a really nice truck. Love the color. Its a dark gray. But im finding myself missing my truck bad. Cant wait to get it back. I do like the seats in the 2nd gen way more!

the only thing i like better about the 2nd gens over first is they have more room in side and can tow more or tow the same weight easier. but since i rarely tow or carry people in truck i love my 1st gen

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
2nd generation, have never driven a 1st but want too, love the look of the 1st generations a lot. I love my 2nd generation, but if it turns out to be a dent magnet like my dad's 08 Accord did, I will be looking at trading it for a 04 with a V6 and a 5 speed
