I dont know about you but when I put something metal in a vice that I think might get damaged,I wrap it in a towel then sucure it in the vice. Good luck w/your prodject

Rap something around those splines then put in the vise facing down. i used a ball joint fork and a large hammer, and worked my way around the end.

You need to use a brass hammer or a brass bar as a punch with a heavy hammer. I did boots on both sides of mine and that's what I used.
