My profile picture is of my '96 Tacoma with my custom camper shell.
It is great for camping and vacations, anyone else out there use their Tacoma as a camper?

Welcome to TW I've been thinking of using the taco camping. So far I figured I would either make a cheap camper trailer, or a tent in the bed or something.

Welcome. How much did you pay for the camper? Is it easy to remove? Do you leave it on all the time?

    Montana.

Sorry guys, am new to this so don't know if my replies are going where they need to go!!

A little more info on my camper shell. It is bolted to the body of the truck,
but can be removed. I like the permanent set up as I do not have to worry about tie downs or the camper sliding around in the bed.

The cab over section is strictly for storage. The bed is designed to utilize a removable insert. The bed is slightly above the truck's wheel wells. Combined with a 4 inch overhang creates a nice size bed for 2. It has an escape hatch on the top rear roof which allows me to stretch or dress standing up. This unit is strictly low tech. I pack my ice box, camp stove, instead of a nailed down frig and stove.
It weighs about 400 lbs with the insert. Driving characteristics are more like a truck cap than a camper. No sway, no overloaded suspension, etc.
I get 21-22 mpg on the highway vs 14-16 mpg with a stand up camper.

The cost on the shell runs about $1500.00 in material, and $900.00 in labor.
A full sized camper runs about $10-$14,000.
