I'm stoked. My '99 Prerunner lives with the shame of eczema no longer! When I first picked up the pickup, it ran fine and had less rust on the undercarriage than my '08 Mazda. But the same Arizona weather that kept the rust away also cooked the hell out of the clear, and I don't know if it lived through some sandstorms or what, but the paint was totally pitted.

Yeah, fugly. Even the paint on the center caps was flaking off. But I managed to get connected with a guy who owns a paint shop and is setting up the Taco with a new skin, for a very good price. I stopped in the other day and saw this on the floor...

Supposed to be ready tomorrow by 4, including new exterior sill weatherstrips and Toyota decal$$$. Cash only deal, sure, but the savings is worth the dent in the checking account. I just need to finish hitting the center caps with another coat of 1E7, and douse the frame in Fluid Film and it will be back on the road. Psyched!!!!!

Yeah, I know, the wheels. I repainted the center caps 1E7 Toyota silver, but they are way too light. Maybe just shoot the wheels black too.

Yes, that's the same hood as the one pictured above! (There is a little bead of water in the middle - not a scratch!) I also buffed out and sealed the nasty yellow headlights with the 3M kit. Incredible difference in the light output!

Dropped the extra dime (quite a few dimes, actually) and replaced the weather strips too.

Now I just need to figure out what I'm going to do with that bleached out grille!

So how much cash did you have to throw down for the paint job, it looks great in the pictures.

Well, the truck looks loads better of course, but apparently my "buddy" at the paint shop gave me the work truck special. While the coverage is complete, the finish is far from perfect. A fair amount of orange peel and more fisheyes than at Red Lobster. Of course, I can get most of that out if I bring it back for some additional wet sanding for only $200. He did mention that he put a nice heavy coat of clear on to make the final wet sand easier, but I feel like I got a little bit of a bait n switch. Why wouldn't I want another wet sand? He kept mentioning how it looks like a great work truck now. That includes a overspray effect in the bed, although all exterior body surfaces are nice and glossy. He removed most of the trim so there aren't many transition lines, other than the rubber around the windshield and backlite. Still I'm not disappointed for $1500, which is quite a bit less than the ~$4000 prices I had been hearing up until then (one place wanted $1500 just for the hood and one side of the cab!) I just have to decide if I'm going to keep the truck for a while, or sell it after my house project is done. If I sell it soon, the wet sand is probably in order for max resale value.

And as I was in a bit of a rush, I told him to replace the TRD stickers and the weatherstrips without doing my cheap-ass research first. $80/pair and $70/pair respectively! I could have done without the stickers. Oh well, remember kids, it pays to check ebay and craigslist first...

how much did you drop on the paint job?

I dropped $2200 for my uncle to do it at the body shop he used to work at. It looks great, but sometimes I wish I would have just had the bad spots touched up, because afterall its a truck...and will get beat up anyways!

^^skip the plastidip and get some Duplicolor vinyl dye/paint. Its more like a dye in that it soaks into the plastic. I did the grill and valence on my 97 and it looks great. The stuff is very durable.

I just saw your message after I already sanded, cleaned, shot with a few coats of Plastic Adhesion spray, and the first coat of Dupli-color General Purpose gloss black. Probably do one more coat tomorrow, and a couple coats of clear.

    Oh well.
