My girlfriend agrees with being prepared, but her idea is more having enough water and non-perishable food at home in case we are without power for a long time due to a hurricane.

I'm slowly introducing her to the idea of a zombie apocalypse...it's slow going...but I'm making some ground.

Anybody watch that show on The History Channel Saturday called "Day After Disaster"? It documented what would happen if a 10-kiloton nuke was detonated in D.C. - pretty interesting.

Read the book "lights out". A nuke goes off in the atmosphere over the US and kills all the electronics. Within 3 weeks everthing goes to complete shit.

Not end of the world necessarily, but disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc. Those are very real, and being prepared never hurts.

Not sure who said the end of the world, but it's ignorant to think that catastrophic events could not happen.

Methinks water and food are going to be slightly more important than gas & guns.

Here's the thing, in an apocalypse-type scenario, the best chance most people have for survival is to get to a major city with something of a remaining infrastructure. Intelligence density alone will make it more possible to survive, since there will be most likely people with engineering skills, urban-planning skills, water-purification skills, medical, etc. Not to mention, believe it or not, things like food and water should be more available due to all the stores, restaurants, stadiums and other buildings which have lots of frozen and non-perishible items stocked. It is also easier to band together to fight off bad things and people when in a larger community.

Unlike in the movies and books, people generally have a propensity to help each other and the greater community when faced with a catastrophe -- especially an open-ended one. Think more Japanese nuclear meltdown than Hurricane Katrina.

Granted, travel to one of these places might take some planning, and for a short period of time following an event, all hell will break loose. So preparation for micro-community living might be in order, but only probably for a period of about 2 months. But in the long run, people stand a much greater chance of survival when they come together into groups, not to mention humans as a race do too.

I'm not saying it would be easy. Disease, waste, evil people, debris, shortage of resources would all be major obstacles to overcome. But like I said, having an intelligence density would make overcoming these obstacles easier than the limited skillsets of an individual or family.

Just my take on the situation.

The problem with the Superdome was that Katrina was seen as a temporary catastrophe. It was easy for people to do bad shit because they thought they would be leaving soon. For most people it was seen as an interruption of their daily lives as opposed to their new reality.

That, and FEMA royally fucked the whole thing up.

Ahem....those who prepare will be the least affected "if/when" something happens. Look at the snow storms in the east coast already this year that caused power outages for weeks. Look at the occupy nonsense going on....what's to say some of those loons don't cause a major disruption in one of these major cities that causes a shut down. There are so many practical applications for preparedness.

    These are great..............very motivational.

Be prepared. -- Boy Scout Motto

Be prepared, self-reliant, and independent. Times of plenty are times to live providently and lay up in store. Times of scarcity are times to live frugally and draw on those stores. -- Bishop Keith B. McMullin, (Ensign, Nov. 2002, p 96)

But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. -- 1 Timothy 5:8

Do not rely on the government for anything, especially your survival. -- Fr. Frog

Food is power. We use it to change behavior. Some may call that bribery. We do not apologize. -- Catherine Bertini, Executive Director of the UN World Food program, Sep 1995

If ye are prepared ye shall not fear. -- Doctrine & Covenants 38:30

Instead of thinking of reasons why it can't be done, find ways to do it. -- Neil Bergt, Chairman & CEO, MarkAir

It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark. -- Howard Ruff

Learn to sustain yourselves; lay up grain and flour, and save it against a day of scarcity. -- Brigham Young (Discourses of Brigham Young, p 293)

Preparation through education is less costly than learning through tragedy. --Max Mayfield, Director National Hurricane Center

Preparedness, when properly pursued, is a way of life, not a sudden, spectacular program. -- Spencer W. Kimball, 1976

Remember; when disaster strikes, the time to prepare has passed. -- Steven Cyros

Self-Reliance is a prerequisite to the complete freedom to act. -- Marion G. Romney, 1984

Some people are making such thorough preparation for rainy days that they aren't enjoying today's sunshine. -- William Feather

The only thing more terrifying than an emergency is actually living off the food you have stored! Your food storage should be food you would rotate into your daily diet. -- Author Unknown

We live in a most exciting and challenging period in human history. As technology sweeps through every facet of our lives, changes are occurring so rapidly that it can be difficult for us to keep our lives in balance. To maintain some semblance of stability in our lives, it is essential that we plan for our future. I believe it is time, and perhaps with some urgency, to review the counsel we have received in dealing with our personal and family preparedness. We want to be found with oil in our lamps sufficient to endure to the end. -- L. Tom Perry (Ensign, Nov 1995, p 35)

You are responsible for what happens to you. -- Fr. Frog

You won't have trouble if you are prepared for it. -- Fr. Frog

I never said catastropic events, those are understandable, but all these kits with full tactical gear, guns, etc. Does anyone carry nukes, chemical suits and tear gas? sorry just think a fully loaded tomb raider truck being driven around everyday is a little overboard. But whatever floats your boat :D
